Title: This is gonna cost me, I know it ... I just bloody know it!!!!
Post by: tariqb on 03 April 2009, 22:19
Just come back from Sainsbury's - maybe a quarter of a mile away and both to the supermarket and back i can hear a very high pitched squeaky noise - its like listening to a washing machine on full spin but in slow motion. The ABS light has been on for ages but when the brakes are applied there isn't that noise it is in fact happening when the car is given some throttle - not the beans just a little. This sounds expensive - any advice?

lol not sure what it is but dont jump to conclusions mate, sometimes the noisiest problems are the cheapest.

First bit of advice i have is get a VAGCOM on it, if you dont have vagcom buy one off ebay for like 20 quid for a cheap version!

Wheel bearing?

If it sounds like it's spinning then it probably is so thats narrow's it down too a few things. If it does it when stationary (revving) then you know it's engine related.

I had the service done at my brother-in-law's garage  - he hooked it up to his very expensive (£6500) Snap-on code reader which I must admit is the nutts - the only code that came up was 17916 which i have been told is the air intake system - this new problem makes me feel like i'm driving a boneshaker!!  - really not cool - even though the ABS light is on the code reader didn't show anything - - need help asap!

yeah i would test it stationary, if it doesnt make a noise then you know that its not engine related, it could possibly sound
like a wheel baering, my baering is shot at and sounds like a very loud wooing noise, a bit like a washing machine actually, sorting mine tmoz morning, it will cost you no more than £90 to sort if its a baering!!

I had a bearing problem on my old polo and it was that wooing noise and i know exactly the sort of noise your talking about - but this is totally different its a high pitched noise and i have already tested it when stationery - thankfully there is no noise - so its probably not the engine - but ... the noise is cyclical  - basically its happening every second or so like every time the wheel is going round...perhaps......????

Try to locate the problem with the abs light first as this could be the problem. Have you torn a gaiter and there is no grease in the cv joint??

well to be honest mate thats great if it sounds rotary because it means it shouldnt be engine based!

It could perhaps be a ball joint, perhaps even CV joint.

What i recommend is get the car on ramps at a garage, jack the car up with the centre section of the ramp so that the front wheels are

off the ramp, but the car in 3rd gear and slowly life the clutch out, that will get the wheels spinning and you may be able to hear the

noise and then investigate while it is happening, obviously make sure there is alot of clearance between the wheels and the ramp!
