For those that know me and have seen it, looks like I've just sold my camper. Didn't use it enough so it needed to go really. Most expensive tent I've ever owned ! Sold to a local chap who asked me if I was selling it last year. He's picking it up on Monday.
Good news is, I'll have some cash back from something that sits on the parking space doing nothing and I'll be able to get to and from weekend shows quicker (except if I use my Rallye - yeah thanks Chuff  ), bad news is, looks like I'll be sleeping in a tent like the rest of you muppets at Bugjam and Edition38 !
-
Mate, I hope you dont regret it, i have a late bay and as much as i love my mk2 GTI i could never part with my bus.

I doubt I'll regret it, but I may eat those words when I'm p1ss wet through in a tent. I like air cooled, but I don't love them if you know what I mean.

Nick, I've been saying I'm going to sell it since I bought it and I've had it 4 1/2 years.
-
Shame you've decided to sell it pal
As for being forced to sleep in a tent...
I slept in the back of my car at Ed38 remember!
Best nights sleep I've ever had camping
-
Oh well Gibby, might have to enquire about the Works Motor home for E38 then. Glad your sorted mate and the cash will help fix th Rallye :lipsrsealed:
-

-
Yeah! clear out the air cooled junk! best thing I ever did was ditching my Bays!
-
f**knut! my old dear wouldve bought that!

Aye, and from what I've heard, it's not going to be cheap. I will miss the awning at the shows though.

I'll bring mine to BugJam even if the camper doesn't make it. Can't be without somewhere to chill in the evenings.
Nick

What have I missed mate? What's happened to the Rallye?
-
Aye, deffo need somewhere to chill.
Martz, Rallye fooked on me last Saturday as I was going down to Vaughn's for GTI festival. Oil p1ssing out from underneath, looks like it's something to do with the transfer box, but not sure exactly yet as I daren't ring the garage.
-
theres a transfer box up for grabs on clubgti Gibby

Christ mate, I remember those feelings! Hope it's all ok mate, those damn Rallyes, like blinking women!
Is that the rear diff then? If so I had the same problem, mine locked a little before spilling some oil. Was not too bad in the end.
-
Thanks for the heads up Chuff. I know the garage is waiting for parts so I may not need a new one.
No it's the front one. There wasn't any oil left in it when they looked at it. Don't know why I bother sometimes.

For the noise

I can't believe you sold it.
So what mod's you going to do on the rallye?

Passat Syncro gearboxes have shared oil with the main gearbox, IIRC - fitting one of those might stop this happening again. Not been launching it on the strip, have you? Rallye componentry's not really a fan of that. Maybe I shouldn't ask, but you are running matched tyres on all same-size rims, aren't you? The Syncro system's a right git for needing to have everything matched up properly.
-
Hope Camper is going to a good home!
Was a couple of nice Rallye's at that meet last week so hope you get yours fixed soon!
-
Not doing anything to it at the moment Si apart from getting it repaired.

Not launched it on a strip for two years. I didn't even make it to Santa Pod last week and I had no intention of doing the 1/4 mile anyway. Wheels are circular and in 8x16 guise all round. It's running slightly stretched tyres 195/45/16 (oh the sin !). When it broke down it was the first time that I'd actually driven her properly since August last year, so it's not out of over use that's for sure.
I have heard that before about the setup on Rallyes. Thing is though, if it's a "Rally" car and it doesn't even like being launched on the strip, then what's the point ! What about accelerating on the road ?
Camper is going to a very nice local man who actually knocked on my door last year asking if I was selling it.
-
just seen this!
Good work tbh gibby...
jsut don't buy a million more clios "cos it's reliable" !!!
-
Thanks. :afro: Han, done more miles in my £400 Clio diseasal than I have in my Rallye and my Rallye has broken down more times and cost me a hell of a lot more to fix. You can't argue with the facts I'm afraid.

rallye beats clio - FACT

Clio, cheaper and more reliable than Rallye - FACT
Any more talk like this and I'll have to move my own thread to nonsense.

Stretched tyres are no issue for the Rallye drivetrain, provided they are all worn evenly, same size and model.
You really think much of the drivetrain on the Rallye was the same as used on the (particularly uncompetitive) Golfs used for rallying? To be fair rallying puts rather different stresses and strains on the drivetrain than launching it full-bore down a drag-strip.
Rallying is normally on loose or road surfaces, not the super-high-grip surface of somewhere like Santa Pod. Drag-racing is all about a moment of violence and when there are four driven wheels involved, there's much less wheelspin and a lot more mechanical abuse (and breakages).
Clio diesel - tool for the job, innit.
-
All tyres are even and the same model. I think it was just one of those things. Some of the parts on my Rallye are nearly 20 years old so I guess sometimes it's going to break. I didn't set off quick and I didn't give it any stick before the latest issue so I just need to deal with it.
You're right though about the abuse with drag racing. Two tears ago I took it down the strip seven times and paid the price as I had to replace an engine mount and the manifold gasket soon after. I think I lost a couple of bolts on the way home too !

Exactly. Some people are just short sighted.

i now have glasses Gibster!!
I think the clio is a great idea.. wonder if you'll regret letting the van go as much as the cabby.. but then again it's not like you've ever really moved backwards with motors (we won't count the clio)
-
Fair play on getting rid Gibby, here's to the next toy when everything is rosy
Dinx
-
TBH I have always wanted a Camper but have never bought one for the reason you are now selling!
Ditto with a Beach Buggy! Would never use it enough to justify having one!
-
I've never really regretted selling my cab and the idea now is not to get a new car, got enough trying to get my Rallye sorted out. I've never been one for new cars anyway so I don't mind looking like a scruff in an old sh1tty banger. The cheque is cashed so waiting for that to clear and she'll be gone around Wednesday next week. I'm really not as @rsed as I thought I would be. See if that changes after camping in a tent at a couple of shows eh !
-
Rallye must be costing a fortune!
Unless Ibiza beckons again!
-
Rallye repairs will not be cheap. Apparently it's the transfer box bearing and it's currently sitting on some ramp being propped up.
No Ibiza this year.
-
No camper? Airbed FTW !
