Title: Odd Electric window problems
Post by: Rmachines on 03 April 2009, 13:25
Ok this fault is spread across two cars so i will start with the first one.

On my 16v conversion, none of the electric windows work... they used to before i changed it all to a diffrent loom,  however, the drives side will work sometimes, then once its down it will stop untill try again later.  I have checked and changed all swtiches, both motors deffinatly work.  thats my main problem.

On my diesel, the drives side window works fine, but when i close it, it goes half way by its self, then stops and goes down again, during this time doesnt matter how much i press the switch it wont stop going back down, so then i have to raise it again, then stop it just before it goes back down and tap the switch untill closed.  Needs a new regulator i presume?

I should have this on repeat!

Look at the wiring between the doors and the car body, inside the big rubber grommet thing!
Sounds like you have a wiring short problem and thats the likely area.

I have checked all of that,  i have used my multimeter, there is no power supply to the door socket in the wing,  Same on the other side but that comes and goes.  I find it wierd the way it comes and goes though, it never cuts out while its in operation, it will go down and then not come up.  no amount of fiddling with wires seems to make the passenger side work,  but this loom doesnt seem to have a thermal fuse anywhere either, its diffrent to the loom i used before.   it comes off the dash loom and goes back to the fuse box,  unlike the normal window loom which isnt wraped into the main dash loom and has the thermal fuse..  this is where the confusuion is, i presume something is missing,  but i did notice something odd,   the Long flat connecter that plugs into the back of the door socket thing, it has one comming off the loom which isnt plugged in, but its socket is already taken by an identical one (this is on the side which works sometimes) although the one thats not plugged in only has one or two wires comming out of it, where as the other has all the correct leccy window wires etc..  :undecided:

I havent got round to converting to electric windows yet, but if you remember i had one of the dash looms off you, and i have installed that. On the drivers side i also had a plug that was already in the electric windows slot with only a few cables in it, and nothink on the door wiring side. So i unplugged that and replaced it with the windows loom. No idea what it was for, and no problems since.

I have a sneaky feeling that the wiring altered for the electric windows at some point. maybe you are trying to mix two different systems?

I've got the same problem on my 96 GTI, the solution I found which works for me is to pull the window towards me when closing it and it goes up first time. The only downside is that trying to do this at 70mph is tricky and dangerous!

I thought mine was fouling something inside the door itself which is why it stops and goes back down?  Open to suggestions
