Hi there,
im new on here i have had many cars in the last 3 or 4 years since ive been driving but i recently brought a mint 1.3 golf and decided i wanted to keep it,
so the head gaskit is on its way out and a few other thing so i brought myself a 2.0 litre 8v engine out of a mk3 with only 70,00 miles basically i have done and engine change before but just want to know is there anything i need to know,
the new engine comes with wiring loom, ecu, fusebox everything i need all engine mounts are in the same place im hoping it will be straight forward apart from the gear box is 5 speed and cable so im not sure about the linkage??
please if anyone can give me any advise i would aprechiate it very much,
so fare i have put coilovers on the car, 9x13 wheels on rear and 7x13 front streched tyres lowerd 120mm its a working progess will get a progres thread up soon after engine,
thanks

you need:
complete linkages including gearstick from 1.6-1.8 manual
driveshafts from 1.8 carb/gti/16v
fuel pumps & matching lines from 8v/16v GTI
engine brackets from 1.6-1.8, gearbox bracket on 2.0 will prob work?
exhaust system will be tricky, is anything included on the 2.0 lump? you need a lambda probe for it ideally. the 2.0 manifold is the same as the 1.8 MK2 GTI manifold, soi if fitted you can use that. If you have the 2.0 downpipe you can use that, just need a pipe to go between it and your chosen exhaust system, decent zaust place should be able to make you one up. Not sure what bore of the 2.0 system is, it may be the same as a 16v system so a mk3 cat bypass pipe may work. Other option is G60 downpipe & cat bypass, fits straight on a MK2 16v zaust system.
fusebox is all well & good if the 1.3 is a 90spec, if not you'll also need to convert the 1.3 to 90spec wiring, or splice the mk3 loom to the 1.,3 fusebox. other option is to have the head off and fit a MK2 digifant one, plus managment. If you do go with MK3 managment, keep the MK2 1.3 coil, TCI & loom, bin the crappy mk3 coil. To make it work you need to keep the 2 fusebox wires to the coil, and splice pin 6 from the TCI to the ECU trighger wire on the MK3 coil plug (red/green)
Ideally while engine out fit a front arb, GTI rear beam with arb and some decent brakes!

well thanks for your help i didnt relise there was quite as much to it but im quite good with cars and engines so should be able to sort it, picking up the engine tommorow it will meen alot more to me when the engines in front of me then i can work out exactly what needs doing,
thanks for you help mate

yeah prob with the 1.3 is bugger all is any use! forgot to add you'll need speedo, clutch and accellerator cables from 1.6-1.8 manual engine (not G60)

ive got a spare rear engine bracket here and all of the gearlinkage to if you need it, euro-gti!

i forgot to mention, you could use mk3 mounts/brackets if you also fit a mk3 subframe.
mk3 wishbones, shafts & track rods can be used too as long as you use the lot together (widetrack)

sounds like a pain in the arse, hope its not that bad when i stick the 2.0 block in mine....

cheers everyone heres an update,
i have a donor car now its a mark 3 1.8 driver,
i picked the engine up tonight and started striping the bits i dont need off like old exhaust, spark plug look exaclty how they should and the bloke said it was running well, looks like it was,
i have 265mm brakes now from mk3 gti,
plan is to strip my interior out and just take the 1.8 mk3 seats put them in, then take engine mounts, inside car bit of wiring loom as mines not 90 wiring, take full exhaust from the mk3 and any other bits i need then should start work tuesday got my engine houst and bits hopefully be running thursday night,
i have a few pics so fare an il post a progress thread when its in taking it to santa pod next month all being well hoping for late 16 quarter mile were see once its striped and ported and polished an a few other bits,
cheers

no its a 2 litre engine

no its a 2 litre engine
You said a couple of posts above its a 1.8 driver
I think you will be lucky to get that all swopped and running in a couple of days, its a massive job and i can see there being quite a few differences between the mk2 and mk3 stuff for example fuel system and exhausts

Think he's got the mint 1.3 golf mk2, the donor 1.8 golf mk2 and just the engine/loom/ecu etc from a 2.0 mk3 (plus a very busy looking garage!)

Just reread it and i agree, a mint 1.3 mk2, a mk3 1.8 and 2.0engine and various bits

yeah someone is reading,
anyway started the workl yestoday and as usal problems started ariving,
the mk3 engine had a hydraulic clutch on it so i had to find a full hydro clutch sytem then when i got back it looked like there was no way to mount a new clutch pedal as theres alot in the way on the bulk head,
second problem was the rear driver engine mount i would have to fabricate somthing but a mk2 gti mount fitted perfect and i have a mk2 gti gearbox now which also fits al i have to do now is find linkage,
while i could do anything yestoday i spent a good 2 hours polishing my engine bay so now its super shiney and looks sweet,
i also replace the hubs bigger discs new pads an disc put in a mk 2 fuel pump should be done tonight
