Title: Cams for a 16v KR

Ok Ive been thinking about engine conversions etc for a long time now and Ive come to the conclusion that Id like to keep the car with the original engine - I still would like a bit more low end grunt before I get to the power band after 4k and was wondering if any of you guys had fitted or tried a 16v thats been cammed and what difference it made? I realise that the car does what it does (eg all the power after 4k) because of the current cams so Im also wondering whats the best road to go down as far as picking my cams.

When I worked at TSR, we never found much gain by fitting cams to be honest.

Haha - reason Im on about it is that Ive had the cambelt changed this week. Only got receipts for a cambelt change in 2001 so wasnt gonna risk it!!

New dizzy seal whic EVERYWHERE and EVERYONE says fits - but it obviously doesnt - mine seems to be 42mm (the black one around the head) and the recommended VW part is the little green bugger

So I reckon Ill get the head re-conned maybe an exhaust manifold + full system and see how she goes

Timing is now set properly at 6degrees thanks to rubjonny so we`ll see how she runs

For what its worth I agree with Wayned, I had my 16v tuned at TSR, they said it was spot on and that cams would give it more power lower down the rev range but less top end and may make it less driveable.

Its 157 brake at the moment and I'm happy with it.

If I wanted more power then I would be keen on a droping a 1.8 20v in but this is big bucks eh?

Plus keeping the original engine in makes the car potentialy worth more when selling as there aren't many nice original (ish) 3 door 16v Golfs about.

you can pick 20v and 20vt motors up for bugger all now you just get a free car with them

the na 20v is a downgrade tho and most of the 20vt motors arnt all that. the 150 is lame,  the 180 goes ok  but both are flat boreing to drive, the 210 and 225 have the power to make things intresting and more potential but lack that something. 

tbh i prefer an eager 16v they can easly be tweeked to have enough grunt and are fun to drive.
