This is probably a long shot but 5th Gear runs a competition at the end of each episode - one of the competions included an Oak Green Golf GTI 16V and I was wondering if anyone one of you lucky buggers won the car?!?
The car is featured on the below link..

Not sure if he is a member on here but I have seen the car on ed38.

Anyone else cringe seeing the needle hit 8000 rpm?

Can't have be good!
Seeing that just makes me want to get another valver again.

Awesome. In no time it'll have stretched tyres on 13 inch wheels, painted-over plastic arches, smoothed rear boot lid, a rusty rat-look bonnet, and a chrome roof rack with some 1920's luggage on it.

Damn!!! I hate it when people mess around with mint MK11's... hopfully the owner has kept it looking original!

jealousy will get you know where mate

I broke it

i want that car too, although the 8k rpm did scare the willies out of me....
-
Thats all good in a valver!!my ABF mk2 revs to just over 7k and its standard.
Thats the fun of Valvers

Here here!!!!

im still on my tired pb, will have the 2e in there soonish though, im not too fussy about top end though, ive had a mk3 diesel and a gttdi 115 so i like my low down grunty torque

Yes but lets be honest they have nothing below 4k anyway.
-
I was talking to TSR about that car. Basically they were left with a blank cheque but very liitle time. The mods were based around a 1.9 rebore which makes most of it's power at the top end. The thing was built to do 8000rpm + because it needed to.
They had advised 5th Gear that a 2.0 would have made better power with more low down grunt, but due to time were not able to do that. The compramise was to build the 1.9 screamer, but the reality was that it did not make a very good road car.
I've just bought a 16V and it's taken me ages to learn how to drive it. My last Mk2 was an 8V and my daily is a Passat V6 TDI.

More torque than an 8v tho
-
yeh but wat torque is there is available earlier, although i do base my knowledge on figures, i say this as ive never actually driven a valver
infact im on my first mk2
-
the 16v out grunts the 8v all the way through the revs. it just comes on cam at 4000 and out grunts the 8v even more.

Mr Wayned
Have you ever driven a valver before? As that statement is completely untrue!!
-
i has driven a hell of a lot of 8v and quite a lot of 16v. problem is 8 valves go flat at 5500 try driveing a 16v for a while then going back to an 8 valve you suddeny find your self wondering just where is that mountain of low end torque cos i cant find it
i'll allways pick 16v for a mk2 it just a very optimal.
-
well ive stripped my 8v bare and ive had 2 valvers off the line, so IMO if u dont feel u need carpets and seat and trim, save ure self some money and lots of fuel and get an 8v
-
I currently own own a 16V i've previously owned 3 MK2 8 valves 1 MK2 16 valve and a MK3 16V (ABF) - Out of all these models I prefer the Mk2 16 Valve.
It's got loads of low end torque and a top end fizz.
16 Valve MK11 = Awesome IMO
don't get me wrong I loved my 8 Valves but the 16V is just that bit more punchy!
-
meh, id probably have a valver if i had the money, im just sticking up for what ive got lol. but i do know that modding a 8v is cheaper and they are better on fuel and insurance.
-
insurance i'll agree on. 16v's can be very good on fuel but when poked they do drink it rather quickly.
tho i removed loads of stuff mine is proably still about stock weight due to the stuff thats been added. tho is very amuseing when ppl try and race at the lights. can has ALL the traction
-
The 8v only feels like it has more torque as the curve is flater, simple as that

On their deathbed, the last two humans remaining before mankind is finally wiped out from the face of the earth will be arguing whether the 8v "feels" faster than the 16v or not.
-
lol i never said it was faster, but who cares, its still a gti, its still a vw, and its still quickish
-
It depends on the roads you drive and you've driving style. As Arsene Wenger said (I know I hate having to Quote a gunner!) Every one thinks that they have the most beautiful wife at home. Persionaly I can't wait till I can aford 20vT power! Well I'll keep dreaming.
-
yeh i like to dream, but i think i can realisticly drop a 2 litre bottom end in and scrounge up some dosh for some head work, its the cams and carbs i cant afford
-
I'm caming and gass flowing the head with 4branch manifold this summer. Thinking of N20 next, might be a laugh!

Also , i believe if you read the bible , this is what Cain and Abel fell out over.
Abel kept saying 8v's had more torque so Cain stabbed him.
-
not trying to bring it up again, but i my car is quicker than myt mates 16v corrado as i found out last night, but then his poor rado is knackerd

Well, Ive had both, a well looked after 8v on a G plate with 120k on the clock and that went like a bat outta hell off the mark. Now I own a 16v on a J plate with 174k on the clock and I can honestly say that I thought it was flat as a witches tit compared to the 8v on take off though I know the 16v would wax it once the race went on - it really does get rapid once you get into those higher revs.
As to whether one is faster than the other well Id be tempted to go with an earlier comment in the thread about how the power band on the 2 compares, the official vw graph http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=21577.0 shows them about the same output till the 16v rapidly gains more power in the higher revs - and that the 8v just `feels` quicker
-
Good point but what is the weight differance between the two?
-
16v's are generaly a bit heavyer because they generaly have more toys installed. an 8 and 16v of the same speck are almost same weight tho the 16v is still a tad heavyer
-
its right hard to type on this poxy laptop
