Took some shoots of the engine bay tonight and comparing them with another bay of the same engine I noticed some differences.
I think this is oakies engine bay pic:

Now here is mine:

1)I noticed that there is a heat shield missing from behind the engine, do i need this?
2)Also running along front of the engine, below the ht leads there is a pipe missing, what is this for and should i have one?
3) I have an extra pipe coming from the breather pipe which goes back into the engine, why have I got this and the other one does?
here are the shoots of the extra pipe:

and back into the engine:

4)Also one more thing, what iss this plastic hole thing and should there be something attached to it?

Hope someone can answer my questions.
Thanks

Can answer 1 and 4.
1. Heat shield for the exhaust, i would recommend that you have one.
4. Thats the hole for viewing the timing mark on the flywheel, you can get a plug for it from VW for a couple of quid, not essential.

the pipe missing is just the speedo cable, your's is probably running round the back of the engine.
never seen that breather thing though!! posted a thread on ClubGTi to see if they can work it out

I finally stumped Gambit he he :)
Thanks for posting that, I'll look forward to see if anyone knows!
You know all the plasic clips for the front pipes and injector metal tubing, can you still get them from VW?
Take care

Hey deefa
If you plan on keeping your dub or you think the old girl has a few years left in her I would get that heatshield replaced asap. Without it the paint will burn off the bulkhead in no time allowing the rapid onset of the ol' tinworm. Once the bulkhead panel starts rusting it will be difficult to stop and you will be in for a very expensive repair (if it can be done).
Sorry just looked at the pics again and seen which one you mean. I think the main idea of that one is to sheild the wiring loom where it passes over the exhaust manifold area. Probably worth replacing to stop any intermittent elec faults occuring in the future.
The sheild I was talking about before is the one lower down behind the exhaust manifold. As you have one missing better check that this one is still there as that one is a lot more critical to your dubs survival.
Mine is actually missing on my 8v but I think it's only got another couple of years in it so it's not worth spending too much. Dunno how long it's been missing but the paint is all burnt off already.

Yes the bottom sheild is there, and yes will be keeping here for a while I hope, planning on a new engine or recon next year, may take to stealth for the work as they have a great reputaution!

I have not got a price on the shield yet, but a few layeres of tin foil should do the trick :) as a temp

Anyone know the gsf code for the heatshield and also all the plastic pipe holders and fuel pipe holders that are on the front of the engine?
And where do you get these codes from, i have been on their site and downloaded the pdf catalogue but can't find these parts? Do you have a searchable CD-ROM maybe?
Cheers
