I searched around a bit and couldnt find a perfect answer for this so here goes -
My golf 1.4s isnt cool enough to have remote locking so it just has the standard, no buttons non-flip key. However i only have one. How much would it set me back to get a new key? From VW or are there other ways? And also can I get a flip key cut and use that as my main key and keep my current key as my spare? :D
Thanks

Try phoning VW.
Flip key from vagproducts.co.uk
-
flip keys you can get of fleabay, cant see why any key cutter place cant cut it to match yours, you might have to take the flip key bit off tho
-
ok cool, once the key is cut do I have to take it to VW to get coded to the immobiliser? and if i do does that cost me seventeen arms and 26 legs?
or are you saying i can get a blank key for £50 or less and get it cut and im done?
-
No you will need it coded.
-
VW stealer would charge me 23.50 for key coding, and I'd have to book it on. (I think this is roughly based on 30 mins labour?).
They wanted £111 for a new flip key tho :(
They said they would try and code any key to my car but if it didn't work then its not their fault and I'd have to pay them anyway!
I just need to research my key and deffo make sure I get the same type - and I think I' right in saying that second hand keys can be recoded - available from ebay for £30 ish.

Make sure the part number and frequency of the remote matches your current key.
Be careful as second hand keys dont always recode properly.
It depends if the car thay were coded to is the same as yours ie immob2 or immob3

What year's your Golf?
-
its a 2002 51 plate. no remote locking. only central locking and an immobiliser.

Have a read of this before buying a key

He did say to me that the flip keys can sometimes jump out of the machine and are cut at your own risk - which is another reason he gave for not charging anything.
-
The tool (not the machine ) that cut my mates blade managed to cut through the center of the blade so there was a hole in it, not sure if this was on purpose or not as it wasn't his blade :undecided:
Or am I being paranoid

thats the key i have. but i cannot get a blank one from ebay, only flip keys. does the 433/434mhz frequency thing only relate to cars with remote locking, or is it something to with the immobiliser?
Though i have this standard key, is the key blank on the flip key suitable to cut for my car?
Sorry for so many questions, just dont want to waste money buying the wrong key or doing the whole thing through the dealers!
My only problem would be that if i got a flip key i would have buttons for remote locking, but no remote locking! but ah well. and i imagine VW would ask for my life savings to fit that too!

bump :D

That is the AK191 from here: http://www.hickleys.com/diagnostics/keys_list.php?manu=43 (http://www.hickleys.com/diagnostics/keys_list.php?manu=43) by the looks, £10 + VAT :afro:
If you got the flip key all it would do is unlock the car via the blade like the original key and the buttons wouldn't work. It could be coded to start the car. As you wouldn't be usingthe remote part the frequency wouldn't matter.
