Title: New body panels...off eBay...
Post by: Shady Pioneer on 01 April 2009, 22:51
I'm going to most likely make my GL look the shizzle for insurance reasons, now, what my question is, I've found a place on Ebay that sell insurance approved panels, fully primed ready for paint, for a decent price, I know a body shop that isn't too expensive and if my intention is to make this look very nice and clean, I need to change the panels.

A fully primed rear bumper for example is about £50, a fully primed wing is £40, painting should be too much, so what are your guys thoughts?

Hold on, I'll link ya :)

Imperial they are called:

Seems genuine enough, their parts aren't OE but still, so long as they fit right and look like new when painted, who's gonna know the difference?

Be carefull with panels already primed, most bodyshops will not paint the in case the paint reacts, most bodyshops I have used prefer bare panels.

They don't do them bare metal. I'll have to go have a looksy at my paintshop and see what he says, cheers for the tip.

No worries, well worth checking / asking first.

I wouldnt  touch these panels with a barge pole! made in Malasia/Tiawan out of the cheapest steel available, panels DO NOT come fully primed! they will come in a cheap black or grey cathodic type primer that will protect it up to the point of sale! expect poor fit, ripples, poor gaps, and seriously premature rust! stick to O/E parts, whether they're brand new, or good clean second hand parts..
Pretty much the same thing with bumpers as well, generally speaking all the pattern stuff is sh!t...try to keep O/E where possible, as it will pay off in the long run

and bumpers are probably filled iwth paper mashe rather than proper bumper material

Id stick to OEM, if not your gonna have gaps in the bodywork. Find a good scrappy, find a good DG mk3, and raid it!

I've sold hundred's of Imperial panels (over the years) and they always seem good quality...and I know some insurance approved shops use them

Interesting comments here boys. Well I got a rear bumper on the way from a VR now so I don't need to worry about that. I'm gonna see what I can find off scrap cars first, might get lucky :)
