Right, 4th year costs well documented previously however,....local main dealers want about £1000 for the following  and given the way i have been treated and given the fact I now intend to keep my car into her 5th and 6th years have decided to go to an independent VW/Audi specialist for the following.
Your comments, concerns and contributions are encouraged, before I commit.
1. Main service.
2. DSG service
3. Cambelt change
4. Water pump (in case it plays up after 3)
5. Fuel filter
6. A/c recharge
7. Brake fluid change.
Not sure there's anything else at fourth year...perhaps the pollen filter?
Anyway, going to www.a4audi.co.uk i think, or other local VW specialist garage. The main stealers just dont care about your car when its in, they charge the earth and I reckon that MDFVWSH is not worth that much when you come to sell after 5 years anyway....thoughts?
-
According to the VW Website, if you have a written quote from another garage using genuine parts within 5 miles they will match it so you might be able to get your Stealer to do that if a specialist is nearby.
To be honest 1000 sounds about what i'd expect from a dealer, mine is quoted at £884 and doenst include the AC recgharge or water pump,

Some of your extras cost more than the vital service, golfclubs.
£1000 sounds about right.

Id ageen with above comment.
At 4 years, it be due its annual service, if its on t&d, which would be its main service, which would be fuel filter, pollen filter, maybes air filter?. It would also yes, be due tis cambelt&tensioner repalced. Water pump is advised, as its within the same area, but is down to customer if they want this doing. Brake fluid change is advised evey 2 years, so if you last had it done in 2007, then yeah thats due.
Service cost would be around £280-£310 (rough estimate)
Cambelt, tensioner and water pump would be around £450
Brake fluid change £46.88
A/C service £79.99
DSG oil and filter change, im not entiley sure, i wouldnt even like to guestimate..
all these prices are at our labour rate of £79.95 a hour, thats including VAT.

They have done the servicing inc dsg and remap on my car and I would recommend them no question.
-
I would go for it and save the extra money - as long as you know they can be trusted.
I agree that after the first few years people wouldnt bother with a full VW history - as long as it has a full service history you should be fine!
-
Iwas looking at big bills at the end of last year so i stagered the jobs.
tyres in december.
cambelt and waterpump in january.
rear brakes and mot in february.
extended warranty in march.
Also if you stay in vw dealer network then if something does go wrong and you havent got any warranty then you would get gooodwill. If you dont then you wont.
-
^^ very true, and if you stay loyal to one dealer, then they have the ability to give goodwill ASWELL as from vw..
but only with at least full service history.
-
Why is that as a car gets older & worth less the service costs go up ??. :nerd: :smug:

Go to a trusted specialist ~ you're more likely to get better standard of service and save £00's in the process, maybe £000's over a period of a few years. I don't know how much VW charge, but Audi meain dealers want £90 p/h whereas most specialists charge around £45 p/h.
You need to find a decent specialist though - fortunately I have one within 4 miles of me and have been using them for the past 8 years. I know exactly who is working on my car, who drives it and I know it doesn't get ragged on a test drive.
What's more, they have more experience with common problems on older cars - mechanics at main dealers move around often so the knowledge is often lost.

Lots of good points about going to an independent specialist....
But just remember to insist they use original stuff on your car, I went to a local one and he tried to sell me some naff oil and said it was roughly the same as the VW one. Put me off a little, but the service level was good that aside.
-
Can you supply your own oil etc for the service though?
How much would you supply?
-
Thanks all for the comments, the independents costs are way cheaper than the main agent.
Still gathering all costs, will report on the savings I make,....I was considering just getting the main service done by the main dealer, thereby keeping the service integrity up. But to be honest the two indies Ive talked to have impressed me way more than the one stop shop that is the Main Dealer.
I want to also get my ecu reflashed (long story about a revo trial and fall out with supplier)...will an independent be able to do that or will I have to face up to the inevitable and cross the threshold into Mordor?

labour rates differ anyways, wherever in the country you are. Our labour rate here is £66 + vat..

My husband has never used a main dealer from new for his Scooby. It is common knowledge within the owners network that a reputable specialist does a far better job than a dealer. They use genuine parts and decent synthetic oil (the dealers use semi-synth magnatec ). He pays about £45/hr instead of £85ish, too.
I know that VWs are a bit different, in that they appeal to non car nerds as well as us , so convincing a prospective buyer that a non VW stamped book is fine could be a bit harder.
If you trust your dealer alternative, then I'd say go for it.

Very true, some London Audi dealers want £120+VAT p/h!
BTW, I'm from Yorkshire originally and £20 p/h is £20 p/h!
For the record, I'm not condoning going elsewhere whilst the car is relatively new, but once the car is 3-4 years old, it should not affect your re-sale value by having specialist service stamps.
-
As above, once the car is 3-4 years old even if you p/x'ed the thing in a main dealer they would probably only chuck it through the trade. You don't see many 'out of warranty' cars on forecourts these days unless it's something a bit special or a smaller dealer. So I wouldn't think having a non VW stamp in the book should do you too much harm financially at resale time. However it may be prudent to keep receipts for genuine VAG stuff you've fitted especially if you're selling privately.
£120 per hour though!!!! My solicitor doesn't charge much more than that and he's a bit better qualified than a VW fitter! I begrudge paying that upper class git over £120 per hour too though!!!!
