Title: BIG PROBLEMS ?? ANYONE KNOW.
Post by: Amzy-Bear on 01 April 2009, 00:09
Hey guys,
went London on sunday and my car went all wrong.
ive never had an over heating problem before. i had done 120 miles that day and then all of a sudden the temp gage was flashing.
so i got to the next exit and it was steaming like F**K.
water coming out everywhere.
left it an hour, filled it up. and done it again after 5mins,
thought it was the head. so ive left it at my dads in London.
his mate reckons its the Thermo-stat.
any ideas what it might be ?

thanks.

I would suspect head gasket to be honest.

how can i definately tell ?
i checked oil, was no creamy stuff.
also started engine without water cap and it didnt squirt out !
dont knw if that makes a difference though.

Cheers

Before thinking its the head gasket I would check all hoses, old hoses all always splitting etc, sometimes popping off for various reasons. If you had a lot of steam you have water hitting something hot, so my first and main thought is hoses.

If your headgasket has gone to the point of your whole car steaming, I wouldnt imagine it would run.

Water pump or stat get those checked. Is top hose red hot at bottom one cool?

i think so, one of em was quite cool, little bit warm,
and one was really hot, the thicker one that goes into the Thermo-stat Triangle !!

Sounds like the stat isn't operating is your power steering ok check the belt cos it runs the water pump if you have a gti

I paid £95 for new pump and stat fitted but that was up here in brum

sounds like stat to me .. you can get the head gasket checked using a cylinder block crack testing kit,
dead easy check and any garage worth there while should have one...

Im just outside of north london, If your car is localish, I cant promise I can fix it, but for petrol im willing to come and have a look. Look over your pipes, check your stat and pump, and worse case do a compression test.
