Hey there, new on the forum. looking to buy a mk4 GTI but can olny afford a 2.0 115bhp jobbie. Are they worth getting and can you tune them up etc? Previosly had a 1,6SE which was ok apart from gearbox issues. Curruntly own a MG ZR 1.8 160bhp which is a fair bit quicker than the 2.0 gti but i really miss the comfort etc of my mk4 golf.
Any comments would be welcome as im looking at the 3rd one this coming saturday. thanks.

Hmmmmm I would go for the 1.8 N/A 125bhp over the 2.0 TBH

i think the 2.0l is a bit of a sore subject here...

Get a quote on a 1.8T you may well be surprised
-
I can get insure on the 1.8T but icant afford the car lol, there a good 1k more expensive than the 2.0
Is the 2.0 litre gti not really liked on here?

Save for a 1.8T really worth it in the end IMO.
The 2.0 is not hated most of us like to do lots of mods to our engines and the 2.0 is not ideal for this.
Its fine if you dont want to modify it (Can be done but not that easy and costs a bit) - good solid car

I had a 2.0 and swapped the engine for a 1.8T as i loved the car but hated the performance,
the 2.0 is slow and not that great MPG wise
HOWEVER you can pick them up cheaper than the tdi's and 1.8T's as you have said
they come with the same GTI refinements as all the other GTI's insurance wise there isnt a big difference between them i know a few people with the 2.0 engine in other models ie passat/bora and I have to say the 2.0 seems a lot more reliable than the 1.8t

I am a Somerset lad too mate!!
As for the cars, I have never owned a 2.0 but I think they are good solid cars as Rich said. As you say they are cheaper to buy but they do drink the fuel considering the lack of performance they give. My advice would be to try and find that lurking cheap 1.8T out there as over time you could actually save money!
-
Well I had a 1999 2.0.
I bought it new and had it for 3 years and just over 70,000miles. The only thing that broke was the water pump impeller and a window regulator.
Performance wasn't great but it was quick enough. On a sprited drive I kept up with my Bro-in-law in his Octavia VRS, but then it is always easier to follow. It was nice and smooth and if you take it for what it is, it does the job very well. Ecconomy was around high 30's where my next car (Leon Cupra) did low 30's.
They are a good solid car that you can mod to look good, but you will never make it into a fast car without spending mega bucks. If you want to go fast, wait a bit longer for a 1.8T, or better still buy an Octavia.
-
i'll keep my eye out for a 1.8t aswell then, i got a qoute on a octavia vrs but was over the £1200 mark, i previosly owned a octavia TDI 110bhp model, was a very nice car. i regret selling it tbh.

Whats the difference if any between the earlier 1998-1999 and the slightly newer 1.8t golfs? looking at a 1998 one, are the older ones less reliable or have issues? thanks peeps.

Early 1.8T's typically AGU has the smaller k03 turbo. The newer AUM and AUQ's have the k03'S and VVT
AGU tends to be more reliable TBH ie the coilpacks are rocksolid on AGU's unlike AUMs. Make sure you have history

Oh right thanks, one im looking at has 120,000 miles though. is that excessive or not to bad if it has FSH. My 1,6se golf had 132,000 miles on and the engine was still solid so im guessing it will be fine :)

I had an MGZR 160 the golf is so much better just make sure you get a 1.8T and avoid the 2 slow like the plague
-
Used to have a 2.0 MK4 before the MK5 and NO NO NO.
Yes the MK4 is a lovely car but that 2.0 8v is just plain awful engine. If you cant get the 1.8T then get the 1.8 N/A.

Looking at a 1.8T GTI saturday, may do a straight swap for my MG. This golf has done 91,000 miles. is dark blue, is a T-reg. Has a few small cosmetic marks but looks very niceee, has the 18" RS4 alloys aswell :)
