Hello
Was just wondering, the cheap cables and software on Ebay, do they just work if you install on laptop or do you have to purchase the license as well? Sorry if a stupid question but was just a little confused!

They work but you only have limited functions, you can run a fault scan and log basic information :smiley:

You got to go into options and run a test in the different coms until one of them works, if your not already doing so :undecided:

Yep done that and all looks ok then after that nothing happens, whatever I press!!

When I got mine it come with a load of instructions on how to get the lead to work with the pc. Ill dig it out see if its any good to you

It told you how to change which com the lead was on in windows, buy going to control panel - system - device manager - ports, and then changing the port the vag com lead is connected to to com 2, by right clicking the lead goto - properties - port settings - advanced settings - then change the port to com 2 and ok.
Then try it in vag-com on com 2
It took me a while to get it working but once it did its worked since

Yep thats the same one I have too!! Seems to be working now, not got any faults come up, just find it frustrating trying to find the bits that it can read! Only seems to read engine and climate control so far lol!

should be engine, instruments, central convienience, abs and airbag if your brave!

ok thanks for that! I did click on airbag but got a warning so didnt risk it!! It wont read possible faults on the door modules then?!

Well seem to be able to use all of the functions mentioned above all sorted, just wanted to say thanks again! I even had a fault code come up, just need to work out where to begin with repairing it lol!! I have posted in the Garage section but its the ineterior monitoring system 01135, open circuit 36-00 so if anyone happens to have any ideas then they would be greatfully received! :smiley:

thanks for that, Rhyso has just replied on the thread in the garage section and suggested I look at the rear interior light unit and check the contacts in there so will take a look at the weekend! :smiley:

So, I have joined the club and also bought one of these, but I am also having problems getting it to work. The disc that it came with was unreadableso I Downloaded the software and have changed the com port, but when i click the test button I get... Port Status: OK Interface: NOT FOUND??? (& yes it is plugged in LOL)
Any ideas?

Does you laptop recognized the lead?? Is the driver installed??
If it is maybe a iffy lead :undecided:

Yeah, the "found new hardware" bubble popped up and I installed the drivers as per the instructions on the Ross-Tech website and the "LEDs" completed succesfully???
I may just uninstall and reinstall?

Have you tired all the ports and the usb port??

got mine working fairly quickly, if i recall you gave to go to the properties in device manager and change the emulated com port to a lower number.
mine installed as com port 11 initially, i changed it to com port 2 and sorted!

Yeah, mine installed on com port 13 so changed that to 2 and the message says Com Port: OK , but the Interface: Not found??? but the computer recognises that it has been plugged into the USB as I get the usual "ding ding" when a usb device is plugged in?

and i assume nothing else is using com 2?

Just re-booted, still nothing also i have re-installed and Com 2 wasn't being used by anything else.
God dammit, it is going to be something "REALLY" simple that I haven't done I just know it!

apologies for suggesting all the obvious stuff - but you have turned the cars ignition on two clicks / or have the engine running.
I think the green light comes on - on mine before the ignition is on - which is msleading!

I have tried it with the ignition turned 2 clicks, but not with the engine running so will give that a go... Cheers.

in general do you just use the Auto-Scan functionor select individual items???

Don't quote me on this, but i don't think so as I think this just reads fault codes, I'm sure someone else will be along at some point to tell you what it is that you do need for this!

Off the top of my head....
I used one of the auto scans to tell me what modules my car had installed.
The auto scan fault finder only works on the registered version, so I manually goto each module and scan that.
Can't say I've done anything with the airbag module - there is a tick box to not scan it - which I chose as certain cars can mess up even wth doing a read only scan on air bags.
Assuming you load the airbag module I would guess clearing the codes would remove the light. But the light would soon come back on again unless the problem was fixed.
