can anyone talk me through how to doa cambelt change on a 1.8 mk3 golf (1996) im good at mecahnics but havent ever done this and i dont have a haynes manual, is it a simple loosen off and put a new one on job?

Have a search for bentley's Manuals online mate you will probably be able to download one for your car.
And no its not that simple, need to make sure you keep engine locked in position and you should change the tensioner as well.

ended up buying the haynes manual as i was going past a halfords! will do it this weekend along with the wheel bearing...

I've done this on the exact same car.
It's not difficult, just a bit fiddly at times. Start by parking the car with steering full lock to the right, remove wheel arch liner on the RHS and it goes downhill from there.
As a novice to a novice, make sure you have an impact driver or someone with one as there are going to be some BLOODY tough bolts to undo!
Haynes manual is pretty good at walking you through though.
It's a lot easier than it looks to accidentally move one of the pulleys, especially when refitting the new belt. Remember that the stretch at the front should be tight with slack at the tensioner. I tightened the tensioner with a metal coathanger. It gives just enough pull to move before tightening the bolt.
It's good fun, as long as the two pulleys are lined up and the belt is tight enough (but not too tight) you're good to give it a try.
