Title: Oil Top Up
Post by: pridders on 31 March 2009, 11:55
Hi All,

I think I need a little oil top up. The last service I had they used Long Life oil so do I need to go to VW and get the same or can I use something else?

Any help greatly appreciated

I have a large tub of Castrol which I use in my current car - I think its 5w30 as well!
I was gonna give it away when I sell my car since I thought the GTI used different.
Now I think I'll hold onto it!! lol
Cheers guys!

about £15 for a litre pouch and £45 for the biggie!
there was a thread on this a few weeks back that had lots of detail in it.

There's going to be a proper ruck when TT comes back.  First people saying the ed30 engine is the same as the S3, now people advertising mobil!  Do you people not know he's not in the best of health

For 10 years I never had to bother checking my oil in any of my cars. Now that I have a GTi, should I start doing this regularly? What's the typical interval for needing to top up?

TBH the GTI doesnt really use that much oil. I've done 13k miles since May and have had to stick 3/4 of a litter.

Mobil do a fully synthetic oil made to VW's latest standard.
VW dealers are using it (something like Synt S).

Mine was filled with it last Wednesday.
Exxon Mobil are not a tin pot firm.

GTI's can glug oil until they are well bedded in.  Even then can sup a bit.

You want an oil drinker, try the 2.0 8v engine. That thing used to use more oil than petrol sometimes.

Or do I need to look for Castrol 'Edge'?

Yes you should, my old 1.8T GTI barely used any oil between services - didn't have to top it up and got out of the habit of checking the oil.  But I've been startled a couple of times by the low oil level warning coming on in this car.  I'm checking once a month now...

Some seem to drink more than others depending on how they were run in.
