Title: Performance increase on a 8v
Post by: MK4_20VT on 22 July 2004, 08:29
I cannot seem to find a 16v mk2 to buy that is near me in the northwest  :'(

So what I want to know is 8v Vs 8v, if I was to modd a 8v engine which is the best to do?

The K-Jet which seems to be the faster engine or should I go for the Digi?

Which of the 2 will end up with better perormance after higher cam, re-bore, induction etc?

Which would you guys choose???  ;D

K -Jet's offer better throttle response 'out the box', the stock Digi GTi had a few tweaks to it's fuel maps and ignition timing to help improve MPG etc, BUT get your Digi GTI chipped the maps can be replaced with more aggressive ones and the Digi GTI would be just as responsive and produce more BHP.

To be honest a modded K-Jet vs a Chipped Modded Digi GTi would be pretty much the same - the Digi GTI would have the advantage that the fuel maps and timing could be programmed to suit your mods better than a K-Jet as that level of fine tuning just isn't possible on a mechanical system.

On the other hand if your serious about your mods you really should consider twin carbs or throttle bodies - in which case it really doesn't matter too much as your working with the same basic block but replacing the whole fuel / intake system.

So in answer to your question, if you planning to go as far and say DCOE 40/45's then it really doesn't matter too much - if not If say go for a Digi as there's more fine tuning available and more than likely you'll fine one with lower milage as they are newer.

That's only a brief overview, but I hope it helps !

I've been driving a 200k digi for the last 4 weeks and it's mental. it's loads quicker than mine was with the k-jet in there even though mine was a 3dr and this is a 5dr. it also returns 400+ MPG easily.

If you're looking for useable 8v power you have to go for a 2 litre bottom end. There's a great read in the Golf+ a couple of months back all about tuning the 8v. You won't be getting much more than 165/170bhp from it though, but the torque will be nice ;D

Thanx for your replys guys.  I'v seen 8v digi, which i might get for a project car & crank to engine up a tad  ;)

Up 2 165bhp eh Dizzie, with a 2L bottom end  ;D

That would be v-nice, Not a nice as your 20v BEAST now that a kick ass Mk2  ;D

I currently have 160k on my K-Jet with I high lift cam & a K&N filter, so i'm prob pushing out around 125bhp????

I might get the digi then
