Title: MK3 Roofrack?
Post by: Live in Hope on 31 March 2009, 08:38
HI, anyone got any photos? i am trying to fit a genuine vw roofrack to my mk3 5 door but cant see how it goes on? the two bars are marked front & back but i cant see what you clamp on to? the ends os the rack bars have a kind of J shape that looks like it should clamp under the top of door area, but dont look like this will work and i dont seem to have any bits that slide back on the black strip that runs from front to back?

Am i being a complete numpty? :embarassed:

Just purchased one myself! :)

The rack just clamps onto the roof on either gutter, if you lift the rubber seal on the inward side of where the > < marks are, the 'J' just slides in there, then when you tighten up on either side it actually clamps onto the roof. You don't have to do anything with the rubber seal as it should just about lay down play again over the top.

Here's a pic of mine although you can't really see the fitment.

Edit - this is the Votex rack, just in case your's is Thule or something!?

eBay £39 posted! :D

They're called Votex & are specific to the MK3, was an accessory back in the day, just make sure it comes with keys & the rubber pads to protect your roof, even better if it comes with the torque allen key like mine did, although a normal allen key would be alright.

There are also Thule racks for the MK3 but they over hang the roof & look old IMHO.

thule 404 model is what fits the mk3 and is the best quality in my opinion, although I've not used Votex ones. picked mine up for £40 delivered on ebay in good condition with all locks, feet etc.

as 88 said make sure it has the feet else your roof will get scratcheddd

Votex is the original one VW offered for the MK3 before Thule although someone told me they picked a Votex one up from a VW dealer a couple of months back (£100 new).

Just need to get some Thule bike carriers for mine now! :afro:
