Title: Heated rear screen button (FAO SAMBO)
Post by: RichGtiT on 30 March 2009, 11:37
hey,

ive just noticed that my heated rear screen switch no longer illuminates red (when the lights are on) it's a dull amber i would say, if you press the swtch, it illuminates a nice bright amber (as normal). i cant find any other threads on here with someone else having this problem? i dont know if the headted screen works or not s we haven't had any frost and i havent got a multimeter either....

I cleaned the throttle body the other day and was wandering if maybe i blew a fuse or relay perhaps when i disconnected/connected the battery?

has anybody else had this problem?

cheers,
Rich

could be a possibility that one of the internal leds is starting to go  :undecided:

no problem,to get the button out you will need to put a small thin flat blade screwdriver at one side but cover the side you put it in with a cloth etc so as not to mark the surrounding trim and then gently ease the button out then move to the other side and do the same it should then move enough for you to be able to get it with your fingers they can be a little tight tho once you pull it out just simply dissconnect the wiring multi plug

morning fellas,

Right, last night i swapped my button over with my firends, his then did exactly the same when plugged into mine (dull orrange when off, bright orange when on), so that counts the switch out as the problem, so i decided to check/change the fuse (No26 if anyone ever needs to know) that didnt cure the problem either.

I then breathed on the rear screen (to steam it up) then turned the screen on, it didnt "de-mist" so obiously the screen isnt working. Not sure where to go from here to be honest....?  :undecided:

I was doing some searching on the uk-mkiv foum and sambo has had the same problem but i couldnt find if he had solved it or not?

Any help would be much appreciated, (thanks for all the other suggestion fellas )

think I may have found the culprit! the wires going into the lid in the boot are completely fooked!! so, going to take it to bits and replace the wire at the week end

yes mate it was the same thing. Wiring on the left side flexi from car to hatch has broken. This then fused itself to the rear wash pipe and led brake light wire. Had to re solder them temporarily but will cut in complete new lengths when i get time. Fuse may also have gone so once fixed check that too. Stupid vw that's what you'd expect to happen in a rover!

mines the wire on the right (if you are looking at it from behind, not sure if it's one wire or several as there is so much exposed/cut wire in there, i will take pics when i replace it/them. looks like a  mouse has chewed them all up!! haha

it's FIXED!!!  within the boot going to the lid, there are 5 wires (blue, green (go to the lock), thin brown, thin brown and black and a thick brown). The blue and green wires were in perfect condition and the other 3 were all completely snapped. The wire in question that was causing the rear screen not to heat was the thick brown one.

It was actually a right pain in the arse to do as all of the rear quarter trim, the boot lid trim and the roof lining had to be slightly pulled down as the wires feed in to the roof not the rear quarter panel as i expected.  I read somewhere you shouldnt 'fix' the wire in the boot but inside the car. So instead of simply re-joining the wires, i completely replaced and soldered a new wire in from the connector half way up the screen to inside of the roof lining. very fidley, but worth the extra time in the long run i think

But i do have a question for you guys though, the other two wires that were broken (thin brown and thin brown and black) o to a dead conttector (ie, its not plugged into anything). anywone know what that could be? i was thinking of some added option i dont have on my car?  :undecided:

hope this helps someone in the future wih the same problem!
