Title: How to find out which engine I have?
Post by: Deefadog on 21 July 2004, 12:50
As mine is an 89, when I am buying bits for the engine such as ht leads I am asked is it 1988-89 or 89-92.

How to find out which one it is?

i can post a pic if it helps

thanks

is your car a big bumper model? if so then its an 89-92

shouldnt make a difference though with 16v's as the same engine is used throughout the 16v golf lifespan, only difference is with the airflow metering head/airbox which is different in big bumper models

Yes it has big bumpers (but these could have een put on later I guess). I'll post a pic of the engine tonight so you can tell me by the airflow metering head/airbox.

Thanks again

if the hazard light switch is on top of the steering column then its a late spec car

early spec had the switch on the dash beside the rear window heater switch

the engine should be the same in either model though. it was mainly the electronics side that changed.

engine code on all 16v's is KR then a pile of numbers - it'll be stamped on the tax book aswell

Mines November 89 :)

From the service book:

Engine output: 102 kw  5G

Code: KR

Strange thing, I noticed that the car was first regestred with the address of ramsgate Kent, then until 93 all service stamps were done in Dortmund Germany.

The last owner told me it was an import, but why in Ramsgate first, strange.

you'll probably find the car was originally owned by someone in the british army who was stationed out in Germany & took his car with him
