Title: 16v running on three?
Post by: skem55 on 28 March 2009, 23:40
hi all, been furiously trying to get my mk2 ready for the road after some major tidying to the bodywork, now ill stress that the car has been moved in and out of the garage at the house on a near daily basis! was idling lovely bit high at times but hey.

Went to move the car out today and lets just say i thought someone had unplugged a lead!

The only thing ive done lately is removed the slam panel but i doubt this would cause the thing to run on three!

I havent check anything on the engine yet apart from the obvious connections like leads to plugs and leads to dizzy everything is plugged in fine?

Just wondering has anyone had this problem before, just randomly dropped to three cyclinders or is my little project screaming at me to hurry the fook up and get it on the road? and give it a good run?

Advice will be appreciated

cheers stuart

shouldn't the title be 12v running problems

If its not firing on all four, do the obvious first, check the spark plugs, dizzy/rotor and esp ht lead, then proceed to check cyl. compression.

yea you probably right ben shud be gti 12v!!

yea i no ill have to actually have to stop the bodywork and sort it or hurry finish the body n then figure it out, just wierd that one night reversed it in the garage was fine, next morning go to drive it out and it sounds like a chevy lump!

oh and its over fueling so im heading straight to the sparks to start with probably find a wet one!

If its overfuelling then you probably have your answer? It is a digi / kjet? Injectors are buttons anyway so if one is a bit eager, it should be easy enough to resolve.

its a kjet system, yea i thought i mite have a leaky injector but just aint time to investigate as been removing the old sh!tty bodywork lash up from whoever owned previously!

so u going for an injector then ben?

Who knows, get it idling then just drop the plug and you'll soon see.

my old engine turned itself into a 3cyl      but yous sounds less terminal, probs an injector ht lead or even just a spark plug may have given up

a 16v running on 3 cylinders is a bit like running a vr6. sounds cool as f**k but certainly doesn't go anywhere quickly.

I had a Daewoo Matiz as a courtesy car a while back and it was brilliant fun - the engine is only a 3 cyl and its really growly when its running! Same as my cousins Smart Brabus - sounds awesome!

unfortunatley i'd prefer 4 cyclinders lol

ne hows had a poke abt today dizzy cap was quite oily and the rotor was covered in crap, so gave it all a quite clean but its still running poo was gonna let it warm up n see if that made ne difference, but now got a bloody leaky rad, some how the top of the rad on the passenger side is leaking its coming from the slam panel bracket hole which is poo'd up with rust!

so not got two problems, which sucks!

I got a new rad from ECP not too long ago for around £40 - so they're not *too* dear.
