£250 will get you a budget coilover kit (assuming you want new and not 2nd hand). All the budget kits are pretty much the same so you might as well just get the hottuning ones from here http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=103405.0

40mm is about the right drop. Low enough to look good, not low enough to cause any problems. You can achieve that kind of drop though with a decent spring and shock setup.. and you'll get something much better quality for your £250 than a set of cheap coilovers.

Coilovers are adjustable  you can have a 5mm drop or a 75mm drop

I have had a few sets of coillies and i dont like em now, its not as easy as it sounds to wind them up and down. You have to clearcote them everytime you adjust the suspension and needs lots of servicing.

I have a 50mm drop on 19s and it does not catch

Shock and springs are the way, easy, low maintenance and smooooooth

thats about the rite price mte! as long as your shocks are good u got no worries, if u want to go lower the 40-50mm the colovers is the way forward, just watch u dont start hitting arb's!

to clarify you have two parts

shocks and springs

if you buy the springs you use your existing shocks

same thing really BUT coilovers are one unit not seperate units so you get the shock and the spring combined although the rears are still seperate
