Yesterday my car came up with the message Service now! Isnt it supposed to count down and give a little warning? It was in theory on the Longlife regime and should be good for another 10k miles though it is around 12 months since its last service so maybe its been changed?
In any case its booked in soon so not a big worry but thought it was odd there was no count down,

Dunno but when my car was due for a service, it had the countdown Service in 21 days or 1000miles.
A few days later it had dropped to service in 7 days.
Then suddenly (less than 1000miles and less than 21 days later), Service Now!
Apparently there's a limit of 1000miles driving after the display comes on before it voids the warranty or something equally silly.

What if you are away when the service light comes on. and the service now light comes on?
You void your warranty since you needed to exceed the stated miles to get back and get a service?!

It comes on everytime you start the engine so is quite hard to miss

I have this too. I wonder why since less than 10k ago and one year I had my second long life service done. You wonder if stealers are changing the regime to drum up more business.

I wonder if there's some sort of faulty sensor in the engine somewhere that's responsible for this as I have had this twice now. I hardly use my car and when I do it's for long trips, ie no short town driving trips on a regular basis.
The first time my 'Service Now!' came on it was less than 6 months after a longlife service and around 6k miles. I took it to a dealer who re-set the service light for me after a bit of a fuss. I had to phone the servicing dealer who then had to phone the re-setting dealer to give them the nod to do this! They said it was only because they were part of the same group they would do it at all.
I used the car for a bit during the summer then due to family issues (very sick mother needed looking after) I only used it a few times over the next few months. Drove it just before Christmas, 300 mile round trip visiting family. Parked it up again. Took it for it's MOT a month later and shoved it back in the garage once again. Next time I go to use it a month later the 'Service Now!' light is on again. No warning, nothing.
I think there must be a fault somewhere, twice in 9 months having done less than a thousand miles.

Theres a thread in the maintenance section in regards to the servicing regime, and why its better to stay on the T&D service rather then LL. I think T_T also explained why the service light could come on early with LL servicing.
T&D is much safer IMO, and the light shouldnt come on early since it counts down the miles or days rather then just flashing up when it wants to!

there usually is a countdown from a 1000 miles not sure why its just comeup, basically it would have come up early as the ECU onboard bases it around your driving style, distance stress put on engine etc and then decides when it thinks it needs a service

Sorry, I mis-read your question, its a good point, I'm not convinced it would void your warranty in any case, the only thing i can think of that it might effect would be if you have it on Finance as i believe you are obliged to get it serviced both at a main dealer and within the parameters of the regimes

^^dont think you will have warranty issues if you exceed the 'service now' warning its just an indicator afterall, yes if you were silly and went over a few thousand miles you probably will.

Mine has come on early before, the garage agreed it wasn't ready and reset. Is it something to do with the oil quality?

I have specified to take the car off LL tomorrow after that thread  (previous owner had it on it)
