My 1990 16v seems to need a large holed boss to fit it to the spindle. It lloks like the spindle has a adapter bit on it that makes it wider than the 1989 golf spindle. the question do i need to try and extract this bit off or can i buy a boss that will fit. The mountney Boss from Halfords for 1990 golf does not fit the hole is too small.
Sorry if this message is a bit messy but its a tricky subject to explain. I'm sure there's someone out there whos solved this problem.
Cheers for any response

Hi
The steering column diameter changed over to a thicker gauge around 1988-90 (not sure exactly when). If yours is fitted with an adaptor piece the chances are you have the earlier narrower column. The best bet is probably to try an extract the adaptor and buy the correct boss for your steering column. There should only be two sorts available the early one or the late one. Hope this helps.
Just out of interest is your username based on a number plate and if so do you live in fulbourn cambs???
Cheers

Hi Toby
Cheers for reply. I have been told by a vw mechanic that the adaptor looking bit on the column is a bast"%$ to take off and that it is keeping bits of the steering column in place. What I'd like to do is find a boss with the large diameter hole.
It is based on a Reg but I dont own it (I wish!) Not from that way either.
I'm sure other MkII enthusiasts have had this problem.
Where can I buy a boss with the large hole?

Hi Dan
Last time I had to buy a boss for my momo wheel I used these guys:
http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/default.htm
I'm not sure if they stock mountney or not but are probably worth a try.
I asked about your username as the guy who does own a16 vvw lives just round the corner from me. He has the plate on a grey mk2 16v. He also owns a couple of gorgeous mk1 campaigns aswell as various other cars (bmw, merc, mini one etc etc) lucky git. I just thought if you had been him I would finally get to have a proper look at his golfs.
Good luck with the boss

The adaptor is indeed a b1tch to remove, you need a puller and even with one of them I had to use a pair of pliers as well to get a decent grip on it. The adaptor doesn't hold anything on, but there is a spring behind it which is compressed by the wheel.

Ah nice one
Why did VW have to go and change things all the time. So you can get it off then any older wheel will fit? how about a boss that fits with the adapter still on.
I've searched for that plate b4, wonder how much it's worth?????

Hi dan,
I've just checked the diameter of my standard 1990 mk2 16V steering wheel spindle hole and its 30mm. Hope this is some help to you.
Cheers Phil ::) :P ;D

Yup, one the adaptor is off, any wheel that fits to older models will go straight on.

If you need a boss for the later model MK2 golf let me know, I have one spare ;D

Will it fit a steering wheel with 75mm centre to centre holes. I think I'm going to try and et the adaptor off though!

The later '89 on cars have the adapter on the coloumn from the factory so its adapting the earlier spline to the later one.
The reason for it is so that you can adjust the steering wheel position easier on the larger number of splines.
Its a pain in the bum to remove the adapter and a whole lot easier just to buy the later larger boss.
Ebay is a good source of them,
