Post by: Madone_si on 19 July 2004, 14:33
Need help....!! I'm looking to replace my standard Mk1 Cab exhaust with a stainless system, but not sure what to go for.

Any help would be great...

I started a thread a while ago asking how to get a bit more power out of my car and the exhausts that I got recommended were a Powerflow or a mongoose system. The powerflow are made to measure and will cost but Adam will be a good person to answer this one for you.   :)

Hi,
I started off with a mongoose back box and centre pipe, however the backbox will need a custom bracket made for it, as the cab has a slightly different mounting system to the tintop. This was fine, and provided a nice exhaust note and a difference in performance was noticed. However because of the size of the central silencer, it did cause me some problems when I lowered the car again, so I had the centre silencer removed and a powerflow pipe put in its place. I also had the standard mongoose tailpipe replaced with a carbon fibre wrapped powerflow tail pipe. This fills the hole in the Clipper bumper nicely.
The car sounds great and goes will with it, and has a noise of 109db (meauserued) so it's not excessively loud, but will still turn heads.
Mongoose come with a lifetime garauntee, but I have probably invalidated it with the mods, but this is a good sign of their confidence in their product.
However, I would probably not go down this route if I had to do it again, I would just have powerflow custom make me an entire system.

i had a powerflow full stainless on myn, im realy pleased with it as it only took them 3hrs to make and fit, you get a lifetime garuantee with them and you can also have it as loud/quiet as you like. all for ?250 fitted. you can also choose your own tailpipe design, i just went for a 3" outwardly roled tip

ive heard that supersprint ones are supposed to be good though.

?250 made up and fitted, I thought they would be more than that, that's a damn good price.  :)

?250 is a bargain when I think my mongoose system alone was more. Adding in the custom work I had done by powerflow pushes it up near the ?400 mark. - it is one of a kind I suppose though.

I can't recommend powerflow enough, they are superb. Had a complete, cat removed, system fitted to my Audi for less than the price of two rear boxes from Audi!

I plan to change my exhaust manifold on my cab from a 4 into 1 to a 4 into 2 and then it'll be off to powerlow to have the rest of the system custom made.......something like yours I expect 'stubbsy' ;) ?250 is the rough quote I was given too..........excellent value :)

Rich, where are you getting your 4 into 2 manifold from then and how much ?  :) Will that give the cab more umph then ? Wouldn't mind doing something like that on mine but wondered what else needs to be done to maximise the 4 into 2.  ???

I've heard that the manifold can give upto another 10BHP, not sure how true that is, but severeal people have mentioned it.

The 4 into 2 manifolds appear to be fitted to the older mk1's. I seem to remember reading somewhere that VW changed to the inferior 4 into 1 manifolds to save money ::)

Similar story with the diff rivets ::)

I'll try and remember to dig out the article on it.

Definitely recommend a powerflow system just had one fitted to my cab and it is definitely worth the money, a branch has just opened up in my local town (Aylesbury) they have a massive range of pipes from corsa style letter boxes (10" x 6 ") to fairly standard looking tail pipes and for the money you cant go wrong.

Regarding the down pipe on the old golf cabs 4 to 2 pipe, Power flow don't do these no surprises really.

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement pipe from? I want to keep the car standard spec, so don't want to change to a 4-1 unit.

thanks :)
