Picking up my GTi next week and I have 2 questions about the audio system. The car has armrest/iPod prep and RNS510. It's a used car from a dealer but should I still be insisting that they provide the missing iPod connector cable? And is it worth having? As far as I can work out I have the option to load all my MP3s to the HDD so I never have to plug the iPod itself in at all. Is that you all you guys are doing or is there a compelling reason for me to demand a cable?
Yes, I know this is a popular topic and I tried searches but no exact hits.

A car with the ipod prep has no cable to attach the ipod. You just dock your ipod on the connector and you should then be able to play your ipod via the head unit.
If you want to play your sounds from a hdd then you'll want something like the PhatNoise http://www.phatnoise.com/vw/

as said above your ipod dock will be linked straight into your head unit. I have the same setup but rarely use the ipod. Just have a couple of dvd's burn with mp3's. These can be copied to the HD or simply played from the unit

Can you connect a USB drive to the RNS510 and play music straight off of the drive?

hmm not entirely sure. Think you might need a slightly different connector to connect to the headunit... similar to what the ipod uses which I believe is a usb type lead.

Maybe I misunderstood "iPod prep". As far as I could see I just have an Aux socket in the arm rest, no Ipod dock. Is that not iPod prep and simply standard for all GTis? And does that Aux socket need a special cable or any generic cable with the correct jack size?

what ever prep you have, you will not be able to see track names unless you copy the MP3 files to the internal hard disk

Ipod connection is poo on the VW systems. If you want perfect Ipod connection go aftermarket. The rns510 will play off the HDD and display names etc
My old alpine system was fantastic with the ipod connected, im still going for an rns510 though as im not that fussed about it, HDD will be good enough

I'm sure I'll just use the HDD but if I really want to plug the iPod into Aux socket, do I need a special VW iPod cable for this? Or will any cable do?
-
its just an aux input so a normal 3.5mm jack should do the job

The best way... for me, at least,
I bought one of these http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/6699.html (http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/6699.html) and it sounds great and works really well with the ipod. I use a Tom Tom for nav...

I have just changed my car, now a BMW owner :) I have a Phatnoise for sale if your interested. PM with any questions. You will need the cable from the Stereo to the Phatnoise, it has an 80gig Hard Drive and can be controlled via the stereo.
