Title: ARB Review
Post by: Grand Master Patch on 22 March 2009, 08:25
Now for my views on the H&R 26mm front arb and Neuspeed 28mm(middle setting) rear arb combo....

The difference is unbeleivable,i have really tested it out today(Milnrow/Kingsway roundabouts for those who know the area) and i'm honestly shocked at the handling of the car.It can really corner at speed now, with just the rear arb it was a little too tail happy for my liking and my inside front wheel would lose traction spinning up and slowing the exit of the corner. Now the front has been fitted,it's elimminated the front wheel spinning and i feel much more confident when driving hard.

I now finnally realise what all you handling freaks have been banging on about all this time, stick your stretched tyes where the sun don't shine, handling is where it's at.
If you haven't got uprated front and rear ARB's,i urge you to bite the bullet and buy a kit asap, you won't be disappointed.

It's going to be tricky if you want the same set up as me,the H&R front bar only comes in a full kit for £320(front&rear),you can't buy it separately.I split the kit with a friend,he took the rear i had the 26mm front.I bought the 28mm Neuspeed rear arb second hand(6 month old) cost me £150.

Both myself and a mate have front and rear arb's,and both agree it really transforms the way the car handles, you can really throw it into the bends and it doesn't get out of shape

Just bought an Eibach rear ARB. I'm so hoping the improvement is noticable as the Golf ain't the best handling car in the world.
How big a job is it fitting a rear ARB?

It's quite easy, just jack the car up and get some blocks under the wheels, then it's just a matter of bolting it on.

Just won this this morning do I need anything else to fit it, I've got Powerflex ARB Bushes? Looking in your pictures you have drop links to the ARB bar?

You should have some clamps aswell, these bolt the arb/bushes onto the rear beam, you can see the same bar as yours in this pic.

Mine has drop links because it's adjustable,i three settings of stiffness to choose from.

Damm right it's worth it,even on 1.6 suspension it would make a massive improvement.I'm running about 40mm lower at the moment.

My mate had a whiteline front arb fitted, and i had the neuspeed rear arb fitted,so we split the kit to complete both our cars.
You won't need to buy any droplinks, the fronts are fine, and you only need rear droplinks on the adjustable arb's.
I got it fitted at http://www.panelcare.co.uk/

Not quite sure what you want to know here, the H&R kit uses a 26mm front arb and a 21mm rear.Any uprated arb kit will be a huge improvement over the std set up.

ARB's are something i've never really understood,

are they basically strut braces for the rear or what?
Title: Re: ARB Review

ARB's are something i've never really understood,

Not quite...

Anti-roll bars provide two main functions. The first function is the reduction of body lean. The reduction of body lean is dependent on the total roll stiffness of the vehicle. Increasing the total roll stiffness of a vehicle does not change the steady state total load (weight) transfer from the inside wheels to the outside wheels, it only reduces body lean. The total lateral load transfer is determined by the CG height and track width.
The other function of anti-roll bars is to tune the high g-force and limit understeer behavior of the vehicle. The limit understeer behavior is tuned by changing the proportion of the total roll stiffness that comes from the front and rear axles. Increasing the proportion of roll stiffness at the front will increase the proportion of the total weight transfer that the front axle reacts and decrease the proportion that the rear axle reacts. This will cause the outer front wheel to run at a higher slip angle, and the outer rear wheel to run at a lower slip angle, which is an understeer effect. Increasing the proportion of roll stiffness at the rear axle will have the opposite effect and decrease understeer.

Does that make sense?

The best way to understand it,would be to go out in a car with both front and rear fitted,it puts the std mk's handling to shame.

Get them ordered and fitted,you won't be disappointed.Only pussy's don't bother
