Title: New Alpine stereo - installation probs
Post by: tariqb on 20 March 2009, 18:14
I have just been to the car to connect my new stereo - the previous owner took out the head unit and so i have had to live without any music for ages. With my mk4 golf there are two bunches of leads but i cant find the aerial lead - secondly when i was out there i connected the leads to the rear of the head unit (through a pair of connectors) but there was no sign of the hu working. I have correctly attached the adapters but there is no sign of even a pulse. what am i doing wrong.  :huh:

check the pins in the blocks, check that they all line up with the ones they are supposed to ie the power cable from the hu matches the power from the car which i think will be brown or red and your earth cable will be black,
i had to change a few wires round in the block when i fitted my sony headunit.

OK

I have checked the wires - i haven't changed anything around but the connectors fit with the ones in the car as does the aerial plug. there is no power signs from the h/u - still need help and appreciate your input.

Dubplate.....pressure!! (Cool name) - I have made some progress - ok this might be a bit of a long explanation and i hope you remain patient with me:
OK the main choc box that plugs into the back of the head unit has fixed wires and others (which look optional)  - out of these wires is a red one but this does not plug into anything - its free but does have a male connector at the end of it - there is another red wire from one of the black connector boxes which is female - so only if you connect the two is there a connection.
Again from the main choc box that connects to the back of the hu are 2 wires a blue/white one & pink/black one. Not sure what these do but both are female. however there is one last wire that needs some explanation. Again as with the red wire there is a male coming out of the main choc box and a female from the connector - this connector btw has on it the following: a black, a blue, and a red and a yellow. The black and the blue are directly connected but the yellow and red need to connect with the other yellow and red to complete the circuit  - Apologies for the essay - but i am guessing that if i connect the two red ones and the two yellow ones i will get a complete circuit - hopefully..... (If you know what the yellow does i will be much obliged)
 :grin:

the wires on the head unit should have a tag saying what there for or should be explained in the manuel, if you could get a pick up of the wires it would be easier to figure out.

OK - the yellow is the battery lead - the red doesn't have a description - but i presume it is what you have said it is. please remember that the yellow and the red are not directly connected  - they both have a male and female connection and only once they are connected will the circuit be completed otherwise if you connect the two main connectors to the car they are non functional. :wink:

where are you from mate ? fitting it is easy there should be a sticker on the top of the head unit that tells you what wire does what well at least there has been on every alpine ive owned . and should be simple case of plug and play

In that case would i have to change any of the wires on the hu for it to be compatible with the car leads or is it just a case of plug and play? -

heres what ya do plug the iso`s in to the hu wires and the red (ign) wire to the red yellow (bat) to the yellow turn it all on. do not slide hu all the way home just  prop it in the hole find and preset one station ok . once fitted turn and take out your ignition key wait a few second (10) and turn ignition back on if the preset that you set is still there and you dont have to tune it its sorted if not swap the red and the yellow wires over plug red into yellow and visa versa do same again preset one station and turn ignition off fully turn back on station should be ok. job done

OK....

I thought that the yellow male and female connectors should be connected to each other as with the male and female red connectors. Are you suggesting that the male yellow should be connected to the female red and the female yellow to the male red?

Please explain...

the h/u loom will have the following connections in the power plug
red = ignition live
yellow= 12v+ permanent
black= earth
blue= electric aerial output
pink/black = telephone mute
orange (if it has it ) illumination
blue/white amp remote output
the other plug will have all the speaker connections

on vw's you need to join the red to the yellow and the yellow to the red this will ensure the h/u wil retain its memory

and this will definitely not fry the h/u?  - its just usual for the colours to match each other with wiring issues.
