Title: Visible difference between 1.8T 150 & 180BHP
Post by: evojack on 20 March 2009, 15:33
I am looking at buying a 1.8T rather than a 2.0 following advice on this forum but have noticed some listings on AutoTrader that say car is a 180 BHP and then in ad wording seller says actually a 150 BHP

I noticed that the 1.8 Turbos have a red letter ' i ' and the 2.0's have a Silver ' i ' so presume the red  'i ' signifies the 1.8 Turbo

Any other visible differences, such as on the engine ?

I want to be able to verify the model is as described and using the registration number on a HPi check isn't specific enough as it only states if it is a 1.8 or 2.0

The turbo models come in 150bhp form or 180bhp form.

180bhp models being the anniversary models i believe

When I was looking at MK4 GTI's they all stated whether it was a 150bhp or a 180bhp model in the ad.
If not in autotrader you can click on technical info (I think) and it will tell you their under performance which type it is.

I only drove 2 golf's one was a standard GTI but it had the 180bph engine and the other in my anni so don't know what the 150bhp is like.

I dont think their is any visual different between them.

Late model 1.8T come with 180bhp, but the only difference between the 150 and 180 is a more aggressive map

Hi,

Easiest way to check is: Lift boot liner, remove spare tyre tooltray. Look at sticker in boot. This will tell you what engine it is (or supposed to be. AGU = 150+ko3 turbo, AUM= 150+ ko3s turbo, AUQ=180 + ko3s turbo.

Ko3s will allow you to gain more power through tuning. AGU's will be earlier 98-00 IIRC, AUQ will be 2002 onward i think and in between is usually AUM.

Anniversary golfs will always be AUQ but some of the later standard gti's will have the AUQ 180 BHP too. Only the anni's differ in appearance, apart from some factory options (spoiler, xenons etc) but have held there value better so expect to pay 5.5k upwards.

You can also verify the engine code as it is stamped on the block and easily accessible.

Late models from 2002 AUQ had a different map, KO3S and a 6 speed gearbox

People thinking Golfs with red I's have more power must be the most common misconception in the world!!!

True, true.  I got that just from replacing the I with a red one.  Imagine what I'll get with a re-map!

I have a 180bhp AUQ non Anniversary model. As said above, the quick way is the 6 speed box but the other way to tell a 180bhp over a 150bhp is the rear brake discs are vented

Other than that, they are the same. The sticker in the boot says 132kW (180bhp) rather than 110kW (150bhp).

Thats what I thought!
So the actual easist way is to see if its got 5 or 6 speed. Job done!
