If your the right age for it, I almost went for an A4 but thought Its a little to sophisticated for me being only 25 at the time. More of a middle aged man's car i think!
When I'm older tho- a must!

Still on the fence about the A4. That one does look nice though.

....

Well it's your decision but as you're asking.....NO !!!!

I see it as a Trade Down and not a Trade Up regarding any driving fun. But if you have a growing family and all that stuff, perhaps

It is a looker, especially in the white.

Are they offering a good deal? Also, how might the value of the  Mk5 GTI be affected once the MK6 comes out in June.

has anyone actually driven one to comment on ride & handling?

....Good point but I'm simply not attracted enough to want to. A4 = ordinary family car, though very well made by Audi.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that the A4 won't handle as well as the Mk5 GTI.

bloke in work has just bought one of these - traded in his A3 sportback for one

nice looking car especially in the steel grey he has but IMO a waste of money unless you need the space

he bought his A3 18 months ago for £22K, got £12K trade in and paid £25K for the new A4

I have a B7 S-Line 2.0TDI saloon which I have had from new which is coming up to 3yo.

Its been a great car, more enjoyable to own & a better place to live than the 320 I had before.

It has hauled 2 big kids & their kit through uni across the country & has enough to put a smile on the face occasionally.

But........now the wife has been an ED30 owner the past 4 weeks, I know what I prefer pulling out of the garage (when I can prise the keys off her).

However horses for courses, & a white 2.0T S-Line A4 with the 19" rims will be my next purchase, that I am sure of.

If you need it....go for it...if not stick with a GTI.

Well FWIW, I've got an S4 at the moment. Circa 280 bhp ;) and a SH!!!!!!!T load of torque. (Twin Turbo V6 2.7L)

It will tear your face of in a straight line. Because it's an Avant (estate), nobody suspects....until they race up behind it, see the badge, and back off!!! It;s one of the faster ways of getting a fridge freezer from 0-60 in about 5secs ;)

I've had mine for the 3 years, after owning a ruck load of modded Subarus. Wifey's got a old Phase1 306 GTi6.  Why am I telling you this?

Well, for an effortless drive that is VERY quick, the Audi can't be beaten (unless it's an RS.... ;) ), however, I get more driving enjoyment out of the Wife's GTi6! That goes the same for the Scoobs. They pushed out some serious bhp, but didn't have the go-kart handling of the Pug.

Now, I'm (ONLY!!!!) 35. The Audi has been in my life for the last 3 yrs. It has served me well has a family lugger and bit of prestige. I'm hankering for something else.....more GTi-like..... hence my being on this site and looking for a Mk5!!

Don't get me wrong, the Audi is FANTASTIC and regardless of other comments, is a MAJOR step up from the VW in all but the drive. Personally, I'm going to scratch this itch with some silly cars and come back to something like an RS4 or 6 later on in life.

The new A4, though, is a significant step ahead of the A4 of the vintage of your 2.7T S4...  I've driven a diesel (170bhp) version of the one pictured and throught that it was OK, I prefer the handling of my Golf though...

I had a (rare as rocking horse poo) manual 250bhp 2.7T Quattro A6 and as a motorway car it was great. The engine was very good but on anything other than a motorway whilst it had plenty of grip it handled like a ponderous dog... it's because of Audi's insistance of placing the engine ahead of the front wheels in the proper quattro (i.e. permanent 4WD)...

I like my 306 GTi-6 too... I liked my 2 DC2 Integra Type-R's even more...

I wouldn't bother.  The S-Line Audi's look good but I bet you will be disappointed/bored with the way it drives . A GTI to one of these isn't really trading up is it?

Well, whilst my S4 may be "vintage", it will put the Tdi in its place. I semi agree with the handling statement. I've driven the both the new A4 and S3/4 range. Mine isn't that far behind (all things considered).

This post isn't based on dented pride considering what appeared as slagging my car off ;) It's based on my findings - I don't spend my money carelessly ;) :)

I used to have an S-line A4, not as fresh looking as the white one pictured, very  - it was the older style....But I saw one of these just yesterday & I think they look really aggressive in white with s-line trim, plus those daytime runners are well smart.

I drove mine to the south of france & arrived without an ache or pain, really smooth ride, comfortable....you could say thats the problem, just too comfortable, if your into comfort over fun then go for it - I ended up selling mine to my dad

No not slagging it off at all.

There is quite a difference in the "chassis" between your version of the A4/S4 and the current versions. Your S4 would definitely put a current 170 TDI in its place... and I never said it wouldn't; however, I prefer the handling of the newer version - they're more nimble in my view.

As i said I like the 2.7 Twin Turbo engine and whilst the grip in the S4's and the A6TQS I had was fine the handling was not great, very lazy turn-in, tendancy to understeer etc...

I driven the cars in question so the opinions I express are based on my findings too

Post by: DanoGTI on 20 March 2009, 17:31
I wholeheartedly agree with you on the laziness - also reflected in the other poster's comments. It's just LAZY to drive. Easy. Boring!

I know what you mean about the "nimbleness" - I was SOOOO disappointed with the S3. I thought with effectively 10 years of development, the car was going to be great. And it was.... in a straight line. :(

Went into a GTI straight after, and it was grin after f'in grin!! Even the percieved missing 65bhp didn't make that much difference. The GTI was much more planted (on the exact same test route).

Which just goes to show, there's more to a car than b@lls-out acceleration! :)

In response to the original poster ;), wait for the Audi - grow in to one. I'm pretty sure I went into mine too early, hence my changing now (if I can ever find the right damn car!!LOL! :) )
A mate of mine went from a Scooby P1 to an RS6 Avant. Sorted the dodgy suspension (that Audi STILL can't fix!! ) and has spent additionally £££££KKKKK sorting it to go even faster. Yet he still says, it's a barge. If you like that sort of thing ;)

All IMHO ;)

I think Martin , you will get bored of that rather quickly. Its a Mundain car under a loud colour.

Been there and bought the family style car , and regretted selling the GTi. Cost me a few grand loss aswell.

I've just come from a 450bhp RS4 (apparently from the vintage era ) and a stage 2 ed30 dsg is not that far off in the dry - in the wet it will be a different matter though - that is when quattro comes into its own! (and BTW, the RS4 and S4 have permanent 4WD which is virtually unchanged from the original quattro Torsen setup).

some good reasons but get a remap for the GTI and it will outrun the A4 all day long

plus if you buy an A4 you will become a  c o c k as Jeremey Clarkson pointed out in Top Gear

those figures dont say anything to me mate regardless as the gti is still a better, sleeker, cooler, classic car with character A4 is just a car
gti is a motoring icon and the original gti badge holder worthy of the badge, my grandad had a A4 lol

Hi guy's....

Well finally managed to take a A4 S line out for a drive. Infact I took two out.
The first one been a 2.0TDI 140PS version, which I had for 1.5 hours on my own.
I was surprised how well it went, the ride was good and overall I was pleased about the car.

Those DRL's look Brill.......

The second car I took out came about by chance. The area manager was at the dealership and his car was a A4 S line 2.0T Quattro in pearl black.
It looked nice even though it was dirty.

Well that was a different drive all together, like the GTI but in a bigger car, The Quattro was fantastic, all I needed was the DSG.

So I've made up my mind and I'm going with the A4 S line 2.0T but with the Quattro.
The dealership has given me a fair trade in price for mine and some discount for the one I'm buying, so things are going to the next stage now.
I've been contacted by someone about the possibility of him buying mine, so it may stay with you.
I've also been contacted about my BBS CH's and agreed a fair price, just need to sort things out.
That money will go towards the extra for the Quattro system as I didn't bank on getting that little extra.

Cheers

Well... The extra power and torque made up for the size / weight of the car. As for the quattro... It was that good that I'm going to order one.

I've got a good deal on the table px wise for mine just need to refine the amount of discount they're giving me. But saying that I can't have both.

If anyone interested in mine please email me at martininwillerby@yahoo.co.uk

£12,500 is a good price for what the car has... and it's available mid to late April even though I not getting mine until June time.

Sounds a good un......

Funny....I popped my 3yo S-line in for an MOT last week & on the forecourt was an '09 2.0TQ S-Line A4 in a dark grey.

It looked th muts.

Spoke to the sales chap who sold me mine 3 years ago & he advised Audi car that they have been given & will be sold on in 6 months.

Very tempted indeed, which having just got the ED30 for the wifey, 6 months would seem fair to change mine.

Keep us informed mate as to how it shapes up
