i have just bought a golf GTI 1.8T and am collecting it on friday. I am buying the car because i am told they are easily tuned. i am hoping to remap with a panel filter and a full system exhaust and performance cat. Would anyone no what BHP i would be running at if i do this. I was just wondering if i do that what else will i need to do to it to keep it running sweetly i was told uprating the clutch and flywheel is this true? what about the intercooler will the standard one be ok. Is AMD an ok place to have the work done in surrey. Sorry its such an essay.

welcome
clutch will probably give up but it depends on how you drive really - could last anything from 500 miles to 100,000 miles!
AMD have a good reputation otherwise give Nick / Ben @ R-Tech a call :afro:
Use the search button too as there's loads of info on the pros and cons of remapping

Hi,
Basically it all depends on your engine code. This can be found on the block or on the sticker in your boot spare wheel well.
What year is the car?
-
Depends which engine code you have :

Clutch should be fine if it has a good bite point ATM.

i wont be able to tell you the engine code until friday sorry its a 1999 model. What about the intercooler will this be ok?

will be fine unless you start chasing big numbers

1999 will prob be an AGU :nerd:

99 will 99% be an AGU. This means you have the ko3 turbo which was superseeded by the ko3s which was capable of better figures. Also you won't be using DBW (drive by wire) you'll have a throttle cable.
Stage 1 should see you about 190-200bhp.
Anything more and you'll need to consider a turbo change for any reasonable benefits!

Hinckley, Leciestershire but they will come to you
as i said - search for the answers - loads of info already available
and that is my 10,000th post

Wait until it starts slipping then get the g60/vr6 combo.
Mine's still on the original clutch AFAIK and has been remapped for at least 3 years  so no rush if it's a good clutch and your clutch control isn't like that of an 80 year old's trying to reverse a rover metro out of your drive

What and no exhaust what BHP is it running at now?

What and no exhaust what BHP is it running at now?
should be approx 200bhp
-
so it will be safe to stay around 200-210BHP so chip exhaust and filter should do it and i wont need to uprate the turbo Cheers

correct and with a turbo back exhaust you should see more than that - all depends on the health of the engine and who does the remap
-
would the turbo back exhaust include a performance cat or just stick with the one i got?

includes a performance CAT :afro:
its the most restrictive part of the system so the sooner you get rid the better
-
oh ok so how much do you reckon for a remap filter and turbo back exhaust what BHP and how much would it all cost roughly?

approx £1000

ok then cheers for your help i can stop worrying now lol
-
Don't expect much more than 210 from your AGU without a turbo change :afro:

Buy one with the work already done, save you a hell of a lot!!
-
its all part of the fun doing it yourself though maybe thats just me 210 is good enough for me though as long as nothing goes bang

Thatst fair enough, Im not that mechanically minded but love tinkering with my car so can see what you mean!!

I would advise you to keep it as is for a while, then map it. It will be much harder to get more out after without much bigger costs and you will get bored quickly!
