Title: Why would my golf be sagging on the drivers side? UPDATE
Post by: Llewellyn on 18 March 2009, 14:13
I know this is my second post in 10mins, but i was justing comtemplating when my golf is sagging on the drivers side, bearing in mind i have just changed both top mounts.

It is lowered 40mm apparently,  is it likely that the coil spring itself is sagging? (i dont know how long they have been on the car, over 2 years i'd suspect)

The spring dictates height - are you sure you seated the spring in the top mount properly when you changed it?

For the springs to change height you'd either have to heat the crap out of them or snap them.

Are the front wheels both the same size?

Yeap they are definately seated correctly, plus it was sagging before i changed the top mounts.

Both wheels are the same size :)

How are you comparing the height, from arch > floor or the chassis > floor?

measured from the floor to arch top.

and also by eye you can see that the splitter is lower on the drivers side

its catching my tyre on the drivers side also

Pass then.

Either the springs are different or not seated right, or there's something drastically mechanically wrong.

Had exactly the same problem with my last mk2,

Was that my old one?

If so, that was fine when i had it on Boge shocks and Spax springs...

Yeah it was, i only had the problem when i fitted some cheap 35mm drop springs.

She sat nice a true on the Boge and spax setup.

Its been like it since i got this one and its annoying me big time!

I think you need to look at the springs really. They could easily be different eg gti and non gti, lowered and non lowered, different brands etc

I'd look at getting a cheap pair/set of springs and seeing what difference they make

Dont complain some of the baseball caps on here pay extra money to have their golfs sagging like an Austion 1000 with no hydra gas....

Have you checked the shocks? Look for signs of leaking, when my front ones went the car definately set lower.

Shocks don't bear any weight - you can push them down with your hand.

Check the rear top spring retainers.

If the drivers side one is rusted out it could make the car sit up to an inch lower as the spring will be resting on the body instead.

Like the other guy's have said though I would look at the springs as there's not much else that could be wrong, particularly if it's at the front and you have recently fitted new top mounts etc.

What's the condition of the springs like?

After two years of salt and filth a cheap-assed lowering kit might be suffering from coil-bind and rotten springs.  Cheap metal rots fast.  You might even have a snapped spring somewhere in the mix.  Take 'em off and check 'em over is the only real way of sorting it.

take both front shocks off and lay them on the ground side by side, if there is a spring issue it should immediately be obvious.  if not, fit them back on but swap em over, if the problem remains you know its not the shocks/springs/top mounts causing it.

get under the car and check the wishbones, are they angled roughly the same?

i would say a saggy shock mate

push down on them with the springs off see if they both come back up the same and at the same speed

i know it is slightly differance but i race RC touring cars and we have to balance the shocks with the correct amount of oil so each shock comes out the same amount when pressed in and released !!

same on a normal car used ERM bigger :)

if your removing both shocks you could try refitting them to the opposite side and see of your drop happens on the passengers side

do both the shocks look the same , are they quite new ? you might have different dampers , one being a standard and one a with a lower spring plate ( you should be able to see this clearly when they are both removed ).. it also might be worth checking to see if your anti roll bar linkages are both intact

my top guess would be dampers and springs ..
