I bought mine from VW.Have had them on all my Golfs.(well 2 MK4,s and this one)
The MK4 VW bars came with protectors.4 clear stickers that stuck to the roof and the bars sat on em.The MK5 bars have paint friendly rubber and on the 3 door they attach to the rear window seal. The front,if you have a look at yours,There are 2 plastic bungs that are removed with an allen wrench and reveals 2 locating holes. They are easier to fit then the MK4 bars were.
I use mine regularly for surf trips and in one years ownership not a mark on my candy white..

Now heres a pointer for you...The bars fit both 3 and 5 door models..Useless info you say,but I came across some new VW bars on ebay for very very little money.Did,nt buy them because the lady said they were for her 5 door.Went to my dealer, laid out £140 only to find they fit both...Gutted..

I have two sets.
The VW ones look very good and don't scratch.
They are too narrow for my rowing boat so to carry this I use a wide set of Thule bars with the appropriate foot.
Wide bars + Foot 750 + kit 1323.  Just as good as the VW system.

if i could work out how to post it i would put the picture of my car racked up too... any ideas on that?

They do add wind noise, Roof bars in general effct your fuel economy pretty badly so i tend to take the off and put them in the boot as soon as they arent needed
