my golf has been playing up again, i think the lift pump has packed in as wen i ran it low on fuel a few times, the main pump get noisey and whines, when the tank is above 1/4 its fine, but a new problem has ocurred as when i was stuck in a massive stop start traffic jam the main pump would start whining after a while and then get very noisey and the car would conkout with 3/4 of a tank and wouldnt start for about 10 mins, then it would ocur again, however in normal driving conditions its fine and theres no whining from the main pump.
my question is would the main pump now have given up because of the strain? im changing the lift one this week but wont no if its fixed until it conks out again.
many thnx

I wouldn't have thought so, its not like its strained - it won't suck fuel from the tank, it only draws fuel from around it in the fuel pump housing.
Guess the only way you'll find out is to replace it and see.
If its any interest, my lift pump had come disconnected, there's a little rubber union holding the two parts together and mine fell loose - so it would only work when the tank was about 3/4 full. I took it out, shoved it back together and its been good as new since.

in the tank there is a pipe to the bottom of the tant (on the pickup)
think it has rusted at about quarter so it just sucks air in

cheers for the replies, gettin a new pump from gsf 2moro, prb wont get to fit it until the weekend, the joys of a full time job

Lift pump takes about 5 minutes to fit, the pressure pump about 15 minutes.

the main pump is also cooled and lubricated by the bath of fuel it sits in, if the reservoir runs dry it can and will damage the pump. depending how long it ran like that you might be ok tho.
