Ok I've decided to get rid of my Driver, and get an '89 1.8 8v GTI, I've been to look at it today, and it's in very good condition, great gearbox, no rattles or smoking and no oily patches, only problem I can see are a few small scabs starting to appear on the boot.
Now here's the thing I want to know about, is the Motronic injection system that it has any good and how reliable is it?
-
....also where would I find the engine code? Would this be on the VIN and V5?
-
I take it thats the 'Digifant' engine?
If it is then the engine code is 'PB' mate. :)
-
Not sure the golf ever had motronic injection - some had a system called digijet (1.3 litre), and some mono jetronic (1.8's), but I think these were engines with cats fitted?
8v gti is either k-jetronic (<E reg) or digifant E reg up to J. Both types of injection are fine. Your 89 will be a pb engine code with digifant which has an ECU and is slightly more efficient than the KJET verison. Some people say the kjet cars are quicker, but I dunno.
-
K Jet had better throttle response - so not actually faster as such.
Mono means single - Digifant GTI's are multipoint fuel injected.
They did make these as GTI's, although I've only ever seen one on web pages like Volks apart! I'm sure you'll have no problems with it - if anything single point injection will be simplier than a 'digi' like mine ... harder to modify though I'd say.

I think the engine code is 'EV' ... does it look like this ?

Just been up for another look and the engine code is PB, and its an 89 on a G reg so i guess that would make it a Digifant then??
.....and he only wants ?400 for with 9 months MOT and 130K on the clock, is this a good deal?

No, the airbox is on the left not at the back

Not a bad deal I'd say, if it's in good nick. Depends entirely on lots of different things - what makes a good car? Good bodywork, strong engine, decent condition suspension + brakes?
Still see some golfs going for over a grand, and it's not often you get something for nothing.
Saying that I bought my current golf with 116k on the clock - big bumpers - H reg, all good condition with a blocked breather the guy thought was chuffed piston rings for ?450. Still running today, so good deals do exist!
-
if it looks like this then its a PB
dont worry about the red circle ;)

Yup thats the one :D

Well that's a digifant engine then and definately not mono-injection !
