Ive read in a few threads that the diff rivets are a weak spot in th 020 and 02a boxes.... whereabouts are they, obviously on the diff, duh, but do they hold the ring gear on the outside of the diff, or the planet gears to the outputs or what- got a proper gti box to replace the nasty diesel box im running at the moment (old gti one spat its dummy out after santa pod, oops!) and i thought i might aswell have a go at servicing it and bolt or dowel wherever the weak point is if possible.
-
they hold the ring gear on the outside of the diff
They secure the crownwheel.
There are bolt-kits available to replace them.
-
ta- should be easy enough to make bulletproof
-
They are a known weakness and will write the gearbox off if they let go, well worth replacing them with a bolt kit if poss.
-
they aint a weakness in 8v's, just 16v's. 8v's dont rev hard enough to wear them out
-
seriously? ive never heard of an 8v box go ever - hence why majority of valvers now run 8v boxes - never stressed as much as a 16v box - they all go eventually though!
-
in syncros the 8v can happily munch the rivets, tho there under more stain in low gears due to grip
-
eh? 8v syncro? your talking 4x4's??
-
gearbox is stll scairly the same for most of it.
-
yea diff rivets are a big problem.. I have lost two boxes to this. My daily at the moment must have 2 left MAXIMUM!! Clunky clunk everywhere I go, lucky it hasnt got much power left or it would have gone ages ago!
-
not an easy job to replace either (or at least to do the job properly)

what happens if the rivets let go? No gears at all or just constant crunch in all gears?
I ask because a few miles before my 8v box let go (was ragging it) i heard a loud 'ping' and then got stuck in 4th. From there the box crunched in all gears.
-
i believe the rivet likes to fire around the gearbox making a mess of things or get squashed somewhere and pop a hole the the casting which your oil leaps through- if your a really unlucky person itll go on your tyres and brakes but either way its all over for the gearbox so its prevention rather than cure.... you shouldnt lose all drive till all the rivets are out, although there are other ways to bugger a gearbox!
got my next one reserved in a mates shed so itll be bolted and doweled before its fitted, also going to turn up a copy of the peloquin preload rings as i dont have 600quid for an lsd and if i did id spend it on another mk2 an e30 beemer a night out and some really nice trainers so there!
anybody know if you can get gearbox rebuild kits, bushes/bearings seals etc- may aswell do it while its apart i spose

depends how they go, i've had one hole the box before and let all the oil out so the box merrily crunched every gear change before completly eating itsel, on others it just been bang and stop with an oil trail leading back to a small pile of shrapnel on the road

8v Box. 2nd and final drive had an argument.

Just lifting my foot off the clutch in second from a slight rolling start at some traffic lights (flashing amber) : :undecided:
Oh....and a couple of track days previous to that might of been a factor. :lipsrsealed:
But I seem to Kill gearboxes, that was my third. I don't do drag strips for this reason !
