Title: Keep plastic wheel arches on not?
Post by: robbieroo on 12 March 2009, 15:37
Hi guys,

I'm new here and have just popped my VW cherry. I have purchassed a 88 F Golf GTI 8V. However the vendor sold me a bunch a lies the car looked all shiney a quite clean, however when I got home and on closer inspection in the car turned out to be a lemon !!!! AARRRGGGHHHHH.

Major rust, basically it needs new front wings and rear arches, possibly new N/S rear quarter panel. The lying git. The whole advert was total bull !!!

Anyways I have paid over the top for a working project. Soo cos all the body work it going to get fixed, what do you recommend, should I replace the plastic wheel arches or keep the original metal arches exposed? My car has the big bumpers. What do you reckon? Personally I prefer the arches without the plastic running around the arches and along the flanks of the car.

Cheers Guys !!!!

did you buy from a dealer? if so there should be some kind of warranty, was it through ebay? again you can have him for misrepresentation.

That sucks man :( hope it all works out for ya. I've got a bit of a project going on with my car, luckily the major rust is restricted to the passenger door, so that' being replaced ASAP lol

Personally I think it looks a lot better with the plastic on...especially if you have big bumpers and the bump strips down the sides, makes it look like it flows more if that makes sense at all

If you still have the advert, then this may be worth persuing. It may only take one solicitors letter to scare him, and cost you only 30 quid.

Thanks guys, it was a ebay special. The bloke totally lied about everything, I still have the advert. To make things worse he purchassed a honda civic to replace this car!!!!!!

I may take legal action. However I do like the car. So it depends on the cost of repairs looking around £1000 mark me thinks.

Even with buying on ebay you may have some comeback if not then weigh up if it is worth repairing, £1k in bodywork is a lot of money, maybe worth cutting your loses and buying a better car and break what you have got.

Try to look at it as a learning curve and think you've saved the golf going to someone he would run it into the ground as they cant see through the problems ... as with ebay its an auction you needed to make the seller aware at the time of collection and then you could have it out with him.

Would like to see pics posted up though, as im sure you'll get front wings on one of the many sites in the matching colour and cheap in the current times :-)

Do a search on net and you'll find a similar car with arches on and off and you'll get a better idea before removing yours

Whereabouts are you located?

Dave

Hi Dave,I live in hertfordshire. Near to m11, have done some research and have decided to keep the arches on. The bumpers look a bit ackward without them on. So standard it is!!!

I had a look on ebay and found a few wings, but the paint man I may use will supply freash new ones anyway. HOORRAAAHHHHH.

I would like to post some pictures on here but not sure how to, any help?

Cheers.

hi mate, i recently bought my mk2, so i am a vw noob too- luckily no rust! and i am also from hertfordshire!

i would say leave the plastic trims on, they make the car look a lot more classic and also very cool - im not getting rid of mine!!

are you going to get this guy sorted out for screwing you over then????

If you've taken the pics and they're on your PC, you can sign up to www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com) where you can upload and store pictures online. Then once you've done it, next to the picture will be a bunch of links, look for the one (for each picture) that starts with "[img]" (without the "'s)

it depends on what you want to do with the car. If you want to do a full rebuild to show, then lose the plastic, including the side strips  and roll the arches to how you want them. If you want to restore the car to original, or just tidy the car up then keep them on.
