Title: Tuning box
Post by: Stevie Callaghan on 15 July 2004, 16:48
Hi

I have a 02 GT TDI 130 and have seen so called 'tuning boxes' on eBay for 50 quid. I think they just plug in to some temp sensor or something. Anyone had any dealings with these boxes (not the expensive ones) or are they a waste of money. They claim 25% more torque and power and better econ. Surely more power means more fuel so worse econ? Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

I don't know of anyone who's bought one of the "budget" boxes, basically they're so cheap because they use one standard map across the entire range, so there are no development costs etc and generally not as tailored (or as good) for your car as the more expensive options. I doubt you'd get any warranty either.

As far as economy goes, depends on how you drive it. If you drive "foot to the floor" to make the most of your new power then yes you'll get crappy mpg. If you drive sensibly you'll find you don't need to rag the car as much as before to accelrate swiftly, so economy increases.

Chris.

Personally I don't trust them.  Things that sound too good to be true, normally are.

Revo/AMD/Jabbasport are expensive for a reason.
