I love my golf but it is only a 1.8. i wanta keep the car but i want more speed is there anything that i can do that wont cost over a grand and will give me some more poke?

Not a lot. You could spend a few hundred on uprated cams, but won't give you loads more power.
Most reccomended thing to do is a panel filter, smooth the airbox and then drill holes in the bottom of it near the wing. Then a decent exhaust system.

For a mile, then it blows up. Need to make the engine stronger before you increase the boost, unless you run it at stupidly low boost, getting not much extra power.

of course but you would loose nearly all you spend on it and insurance would go up alot... and i assume insurance is an issue as you have a 1.8 and not a 16v..

Yeah but then you have to upgrade a lot of other things to cope.

Not as clued up as most on here but surely mods like that would hurt on the insurance and also more speed would mean better brakes etc too. .

yeah i guess lol i never think of all the boring stuff like insurance. im only 17 so it kills me as it is. I will be doing the air box thing tho i guess i will have to wait till i am 21 to get some speed.

No way under a grand.
I'm sure it needs an upgraded headgasket too, unless I am mistaken, possibly just for superchargers.
But brakes would need upgrading, which could lead to new wheels too.
Lucky you having a 1.8 at 17, how much is insurance?

yea theres loads to consider before bolting on a turbo/supercharger.. anyone who says they want more speed out of anything other than a 16v is basically someone who has bought a mk3 based on what they can afford to insure and their mates have bought faster cars than them and they are jealous..

Dunno what you're talking about chap lol! My 1.8 GL is a good engine, and pretty quick as well, beats most of the boy racers round my way apart from the ones who are pushing more than a 16V GTI. As far as I'm concerned though, I'm not fussed about speed, I bought the 1.8 as the 1.4 and 1.6 proved to only save me £50 on insurance tops, so thought may as well have a bigger engine. I knew it wasn't fast but I've gone for the low and slow approach. Instead of speed make it look good :)

My 1.8 is the 90BHP version, I'm happy with that personally.

exactly its not all about speed! this was what i had for just over a year, top speed of 65 (70 with tailwind!) LOVED it to bits!!

Back on topic now, this is not way for me to lead by example lol! ^^^ :laugh: Anyway, stick with what you got buddy, just make it look the shizzle. Low and slow, and you're sorted. Give it a couple years and build up your no claims, get a couple years older then get your 16V and do things to improve that for "moree speeed" :P That'll show ya mates then.

I have a 1.4 with an AEX engine tucked up in my freinds farm shed that would eat your GTI's for breakfast :wink:.... Yea its true!! Running a volvo turbocharger, some bizare fuel system my friend helped put together and 3 head gaskets, pumps out a nice 2.3Bar but sadly if i was to put it up against a GTI by the time it has boosted the little 1.4 enough to overtake, the engine would be splatterd alover the road. We only bodged the turbo with every intention of blowing it up but its just been tucked up ever since and still runs.
So moral of this story is, dont bother turbocharging a N/A engine without doing everything properly, It will go fast, but not got long! :grin:
This is what we did:
Turbocharger from Volvo 2.3L engine
custom made manifold with volvo plate welded on
Lots of bits of bent boost pipes and an intercooler off the top of a Shogun
Dump valve off my old Celica GT-Four (wosshshshshs)
down pipe hashed and mashed off of the volvo/welded to the end of the golf pipe
one way valve for the throttle body vac pipe (kept poping pipes off)
three head gaskets, two of the thinest and one standard (works best apparently)
Bit of retard on the timing and diffrent spark plugs
A Bosch fuel rail and loom which i stayed well away from (i tend to destroy injection components :grin:)
It took alot of time, far to much money thrown away and still its really not even safe to use without blowing up... To do it properly you really need diffrent pistons, full overhaull, diffrent gearbox? (on smaller engines you do anyway)

Ah another post of a 17 year old wanting to go faster, in all honestly mate you won't get mch out of an 1.8 without spending at least a grand, then insurance will kill you. I've had a few mates with 1.8 mk4s and have got zausts airfeeds thinking itl improve there performance and it won't, truth is your lucky if you will get insured, just bite the bullet put up with a 1.8 at the end of the day there's always gonna be someone faster than you and to be fair a 1.8 at 17 ain't bad at all n man

you always find a bigger fish comes along with a faster car no matter what you drive.
sometimes faster gets you know where quicker anyway. . many times been in a van and watched people in front of me cut people up, undertake, take chances then come to the same junction as me. . i just look on and give them a nod. :cool:
