Title: The crying car...
Post by: jazzygm on 14 July 2004, 23:58
Could someone please shed some light on why my washer jets are leaking? at a fairly considerable rate it has to be said, Whenever I stop the car a few minutes later a stream will run down the bonnet from both washer jets, the offside one leaking more than the other.  I'm almost out of the 4 litres of washing fluid since I noticed this start on saturday. Anyone know?

the rubber hoses have a habit of becoming plastic over the years and cracking. a simple fix is to cut them off and reseat them, but obviously if it's really bad then the hose will be too short. perfect excuse to fit blue hoses ;D

Would that make it leak out on to the bonnet though? I would have though if it were the tubes then it would only leak out in the engine bay, and its only leaking around the jets  ???

And where do I get these magical blue hoses you speak of?  ;) ;D

any excuse....

you should be able to locate where it's leaking from. lift the bonnet and get someone to pull the stalk to make them work. if they're cracked you'll see that just by look at them.

What do you mean the bonnet is leaking?

dunno where you get it from. RC cars and planes use it for their fuel lines. maybe a model shop? I know HKS sell vacume tubing, but it's like ?18!

Well, quite simply it looks like the car is crying, two rivers of water run down the lines in the bonnet and trickle over the grill/lights so I assume its leaking directly from the jets, which makes me wonder if its the jets or some sort of seal/pump at the water bottle?

I have a couple of heated washer jets I would be happy to sell you... ;)

On another note if you can find a Golf MK3 down the scrappies nick the washer jets and pipes from that as they are made of a nice black plastic and look much better under the bonnet than old yellow cracked stuff...

And yes, the jets will fit the MK2.  Same with washer jets from older passats, well as long as you get the same 'square type' fitment ones.

If they are leaking from the jets, are you getting some pressure build up in the system? or is the washer pump running? Its a simple system so should be failry easy to locate and rectify it

Went to the scrapyard yesterday, took the pump and tubing of a mk2 golf, and the pump, tubing and jets off a mk3 (including the pump connector.... why did that have to be different when its the same pump?)

Took out my pump, put in the replacement mk2 one, attached the mk3 lines to the washer jets on the bonnet... which have wires going to them so I think they may already be heated ones!  8)

Then got in the car, and pulled the wiper stalk forwards. Nothing. Tried it a few times, couldnt work it out... then walked round the back.... it would seem something was back to front.

I hadnt messed up refitting the tubes, but the bit that attaches to the bottom of the pump was facing the other way to the one I took off, so I had to jimmy it off, change direction and bobs your uncle.

Except it carried on coming out the back. It was then we realised that for some reason the pump was working on opposite polarity's to the one I used to have... so I had to disconnect the tubes and loop them round so they connected on different sides... and now all is well with the crying car.

and that, in short (or very long really) is why I dont do much DIY on the car... because it always goes wrong and takes ages!  ::)
