My mate changed the distributer seal on his kr engine, but didnt mark the position of the distributer. he then put it back in and now it is idling very rough and it cuts out when it gets warm.
so he asked me to have a look at it tomorrow and I searched around on the forum.
Am I right in thinking that I only need to loosen the distributer and turn it anticlockwise in order to retard the timing, because it sounds like the advanced timing kicks in when it is warm and therefore it cuts out, right??

Im thinking of taking the timing gun to check it with. will I need to take any other tools apart from the sockets and spanners to fix this?

is there any way I can damage the engine doing this sort of stuff? anything I need to look out for?

10mm spanner and a timing gun is all you need.

Time the dizzy with the 6 BTDC mark and bobs your uncle.  See here:

Simples.

You won't damage the engine when timing it, only driving for long periods with it set wrong.

all done, engine idles nicely and drives well.
