Title: Cold air intake on standard engine
Post by: slicksps on 10 March 2009, 18:33
I don't have a v8, I don't have an 8 stroke, I don't have turbo...

I have a bog standard 1.8 engine... will a cold air intake do anything to performance and noise?

Is it worth spending £50 on ebay or better to go for £100 name supplier?

What are your experiences?

drill holes in the airbox and stick in a performance panel filter job done

Wouldn't that just suck in hot air from the engine bay?

drill it on the side closest the wing where it takes the air from originally..

as said before drilled airbox and performance panel filter. Stick a cold air feed and job done. should get a nice increase.

Ok I can see that, would it affect the noise? a V4 doesn't make much noise but I'd like to give it a bit of a growl ;)

(my first car, I'm 27, it's sad)

I have a K&N cone filter.... Sounded a bit better i suppose.

So yeah....

Ok Will drill holes, if it doesn't work I can replace the whole lot with a CAI,

Thanks so much for the input.

Now got to figure out how to replace a timing belt :) Haynes manual, new tools, ready for anything, wish me luck.

Timing belts are easy on these cars. I'm 15 and replaced one no problems. It's easier to mark it all up with chalk, over existing marks so it's easier to see.

K&N suck! And make a nice noise!

But wont make much difference on a 1.8

I'd like a better sound from my engine, I'll be doing this to my 1.8 ;) not bothered about performance increase or not :) any particular way I should drill the holes, like how big, how spaced apart? How many?
