Title: Mk4 Depriation
Post by: Mikester on 10 March 2009, 15:15
Would you say that mk4's have done there big hit of the depriation with the realese of the mk6, and the mk6 gti coming out soon? The prices are coming down, being able to get a 1.8t for 4k but the R32 is staying 10k+ even thought people are getting poorer?

Thoughts?

how much is the average of a mk5?

It all depends on state and milage tho.

i bought mine for 4.5k, a year ago

Post by: Mikester on 10 March 2009, 15:37
i suppose my question is, if i buy into a mk4 now do i still stand to loose a lot % wise.

As if you bought a mk5 now, i would say you would loose a lot year on year on year that you pay off buying it.

well when i bought mine 3 yrs ago it was £10,500 1 owner fsh 23k on the clock in immaculate condition

and others with higher milleage etc were the same price if not more,

now you can pick a tidy one up for 4/5k bit annoying but only one yr left on finance wouldnt want to guess what mine is worth now

Think that answers my question then, not bad, I dont like the way the look of the mk5 mk6 is going, so i think i would like to buy into a 53 / 54 plate mk4, as it still is a relativly new car and there are still good buys around.

Not sure what though, 1.8t / ani etc. Would have to look into it, just waiting for a phone call to say when i join the force now! haha then i can rape the banker manager into giving me a loan

Cheers

Which bank? I will warn them to expect you!!

oh and mk4 prices do seem to be falling fast at the mo (with mk3 prices being so low for the last couple of years..I guess the 4 had to follow as there was a big difference in values!)
I have seen several mk4 1.8t's at £1.5-2k recently which is a good 30% less than a year ago!! Will they fall more??  I guess by the end of the summer they'll be down to £1200-1500 starting price

03 (180bhp) MK4 GTI - Low mileage (7.8K a year) - £5500

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VOLKSWAGEN+GOLF/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-20-25-240-4294966995-4294967159/advert.action?R=200908329003242&distance=17&postcode=cr0+7nj&channel=CARS&make=VOLKSWAGEN&model=GOLF&min_pr=5000&max_pr=6000&max_mileage=&vehicleYearOfManufacture=2003&vehicleRegLetter=53

Plenty out there with low mileage that are 02+ for that sort of money.

There a few R32's with FVWSH and around 50k miles going for about 8.5k. In around september when i want to buy, this might be a more commen starting price. As on renewal these will be in my budget for insurance, getting a lot of companies quoting around £1100 on them, and i pay just a tad more than that on my mk3 8v with HIC who i havnt asked yet.

Paid £8200 for mine 3 years ago with 56K on the clock

Like Kerrse I don't really care what its worth now as i'll run it into the ground and continue to spend money on it

i think they've now seen the biggest hit of depriciation and thus whatever you buy shouldn't lose you too much money but then i gues it depends how long you plan on keeping the car

lol just don't buy new cars like a bloke who i work with likes to do

2 years ago he buys a Jeep Cherokee, chops it in 4 months later and loses £5000 on it for an Audi A3 Sline sportback which he has now traded in for an A4 S-Line

He paid £22,000 for the A3 and traded it in for £12,000.  The new A4 has cost him £25,000..........

Stupid doesn't come close to describing it really......

Mk4 R32's are going for around £8k, these days!! :o 8)

Have you also considered a Mk1 S3?  210/225 bhp standard, 4WD & easily re-mapped to ~265 bhp for around £265. 8)

it gets better

his missus doesn't like him speeding so (apparently) he never did more than 90 in the A3

he lives 1/2 mile from work and complained that he barely got 250 miles from a tank despite everyone telling him that he's driving too and from home 'on the choke'

when driving one of the works vans he commented that it had 'too much power'  Most powerful van we got is a 115bhp Nissan Primastar DCI

oh and he sh!t himself when he picked up his new car as he planted his foot in 3rd and the traction control light flashed

Give it 6 months, & I bet that A4 will be chopped in for £15k for something else. ;)

I might look into it, although buying a mk5 is more of a mission, i would have to borrow considerably more.

why don't you keep the mk3 for a year build up a nice sum so you can get a deposit on something then get the rest on finance. You never know what's round the corner!

You are looking at 50k+ miles for £9k. Mint low mileage ones are still around £11-13K. They wont budge much as they are not going to be making more R32's so they will become classics. I cant honestly see them dropping more than £500 over the next year, most cars have leveled out as the new car market has dried up. A few cars have actually risen in value. I have not seen any cars move down since December, from November to December though i saw cars drop up to £1000, including the R32.

Mk4's shouldnt lose too much more as they are known for their good build and are still sought after. They have already taken heavy depreciation for high mileage ones, you can get ones for under £2000 quite easily

Thats saxo vts money, judging by the atrocities i see around london the low price hasnt gone unoticed by chavs either. Its rare to see standard ones and they are bing ruined quickly! You guys with mint standard ones with low miles will see a decent return in a few years!

You can get them for under 2k but you will prob end up spending a s#it load more money on them.

Yeah they will be sh!tters or high mileage with lots of wear, same as the mk4 R32's for under £10k.
