Title: Ignition switch or starter problems
Post by: james_16v on 10 March 2009, 13:36
I have had this intermitant problem for a few weeks now. What happens is I turn the key in the ignition (fuel pump primes as normal) and all I get is a single click which seems to come from inside the car. If I back the key off and try again 9 times out of 10 it will fire up on the button but occasionally I have to repeat this procedure another 2 or 3 times for the car to fire. A quick search points to the ignition switch but want to be sure of the problem before I take on needless jobs.
Also battery is brand new and ive cleaned up all earths under the bonnet just to rule this out.
Any advice is welcomed as I need this sorted before it leaves me stranded!!
Cheers

Could be a number of things, solenoid, bell housing bush, ign switch.

Only way to test ign switch is by playing with a multimeter.

Push the key in and twist. see if that works.

ignition switch is easy to replace and cheap.

I'd like to try and confirm the ignition switch is at fault with a multimeter but as the problem is temperamental I think it would be tricky as it will be fine with the next turn of the key.
I think ill give replacing the ignition switch a go for starters. Like you say its cheap and seems straight forward enough to change.
Thanks for the suggestions
