Just a quick question hopefully!
Did VW ever make a true MK4 cab? As far as i know they didn't and they are all MK3.5 with a few facelifted bits on?
I've got the chance of a steering wheel out of what is being described as a MK4 Cabriolet by a breaker near me but i think it will be a MK3.5??!
Help!

Yes it is a mk3.5 they never made mk4 cabrios.
-
Correct, Mk4 front with Mk3 rear. No idea what the interior is though.

Great thanks, that's what i thought.
Hopefully i'll have a nice MK4 stylie steering wheel in my MK3 soon then
-
Which is something I want to do as well, the MK4 ones look so much nice than the MK3 ones.
-
best do some bodging and modify a mk4 wheel to fit  (them 3.5 wheels are rare!! hence the silly prices)
-
actually their is no such thing as the 3.5 in theory, people like us lot named it that haha its listed as mk 4 cabrio, it runs a mk 3 dash and clocks, interior illuminates like a mk 4 (red/blue) it has the mk 4 (style) steering wheel too
-
ok so 3.5 isn't the official tag...but there owners get the hump telling them its a "modified" mk3
-
kells, you say the interior lights up like what a MK4 does, is that what you based your lighting on?
-
i based my lighting on a mk 4 like my company car, the 3.5 is similar but the dials are no way as bright as mine and the switches are very very dim, i know this becsue i had a full set to start with and sold them on.. iv since managed to get a brightness which is perfect not too bright it blinds you but not too dim either :)
the blue/red is alot more upto date than the green

basically yes hahahahahaha, it is a mk 3 in drag so to speak
-
Yeah, the dials are MK3 dials but just illuminate blue. Bit of a shame, I thought it would be MK3 shape but MK4 style. Dash is the MK3 but a little more modern texture. I want to get a dash from a cabrio, or just cut down a MK4 to fit.
I saw one yesterday as there is traffic lights on our hill. Guy saw me staring and asked what I was looking at LOL.
-
Its still a Mk3 underneath! Might have some fancy dress ups but thats all.
-
Yup so not as heavy as the MK4 tank.
Got the aggressive look at the front though, and the better MK3 look at the rear, IMO.

Yes that was my plan too but when you can buy one that will fit straight on for the same price as a normal MK4 one why bother
They obviously don't realise what they have  LOL

im so board with the mk 4 wheel, having had 3 mk 4's now its the last thing id want in my mk 3, plus they are far too big, Momo all the way...

Yeah but that would mean removing the airbag all together, not something i want to do having been involved in a fatal crash a few years back......
The Crash wasn't my fault but had the car i was driving not have had an airbag i would have been much more seriously hurt
-
Yeah I agree with you there man, need an airbag or it could be fatal. That's one reason I refuse to change my wheel atm.

So how did we manage years ago without airbags.

Some of us died, some of us were seriously injured, some of us were lucky, some of us weren't so lucky.

All right point taken, but not having an airbag would not worry me to be honest.

As Shady says above, it's the same with seatbelts and kiddy seats - we haven't always had them or always had to use them and we managed.....
Being involved in a big smash changes your outlook on a lot of things. Removing safety equipment that is already fitted is not something i'm prepared to even contemplate.....

Fair enough man :) I just always found that when you have an experience in an accident, you get the shakes over it, I was only 10 when my Mum was hit by a car at a junction, I was in the back seat and was horrified as he hit us at the front d/s. My Mum was ok but only because of the airbag, if it wasn't there something a lot worse could've happened. My point is that because I experienced first hand what it was like to be in an accident that could of ruined lives, I have always made it a fact that I have an airbag in my car. Better safe than sorry :)
As GOLF_MK says ^^^ :P
-
airbags can be just as bad as not having one, if you think it will save your life you need to open your eyes, not saying they aint a good thing as they are, but i lost my best friend in a car crash and no airbag helped...im not prepaired to go into that story so dont ask
my mk 3 never had one in the first place, and any airbag older than 10 years is rendered useless anyhow...
how old is your mk 3??
-
I believe that some early mk3's never had a drivers airbag.
Just for info and this is my view airbags are not that great my mate just had a 55mph crash in his car including hitting the front end and the airbag never went off, they only seem to fire if they feel like it, he is ok but we were shocked it never went off the car was only 3 years old.
Worth bearing in mind as well that airbags modules should be checked or changed every 10yrs, so if you have a 1996 Golf the airbag will be useless these days.
-
I did actually want to put airbags in my car, I hear stories though of broken arms ect. when no damage would have been done with no airbags, although I'd prefer a broken arm one day then a smashed face the next day.
One of the reasons I want ABS too.
I'd love a MK5 wheel in there, doubt it'd fit though.
My car has no airbags at all.
The GL does but only one, if it goes off.
I do find it a bit horrible you have to pay extra for safety.

I'm not stupid enough to think that an airbag will save my life whatever, jesus man give me some credit
An yes like anything mechanical / electrical i do know it needs checking / replacing and that airbags are supposed to be 10 years.
I'd still never take one out of a car that actually has one fitted.
Differences of opinion will always happen but safety shouldn't be compromised IMO
-
i wasnt having a go at you, just pointing out a few facts.
my mk 3 never even had one in the first place, im not too arsed about them tbh, we all have our time to go so we just gotta get on with it
a old airbag like what u got now would probably do more harm than good haha
-
Also worth bearing in mind your talking about a car designed in 1992 way before ncap standards etc and in a crash will distort to such a degree that you may even miss the airbag if it went off.
-
the only really bad accident I had was in a car that crumpled around me and the airbag didn't go off (something to do with the crash missing the sensor!!) and the fancy safety door bars actually pinned the doors shut!!
-
Personally I think a single airbag is probably not worth having and could cause more damage than prevent!
Afterall the inertia reel belts should stop you hitting the steering wheel.
IMO the best safety feature on a car is abs brakes!
-
yes i dont have them either but i have to agree with you on that one

Nail on the head there Len..
Just for original info "mk3.5" cabriolets have mk4 rears as well as a the mk4 front end, just retains the mk3 rear lights. :nerd:
-
The new Beetle is a MK3 underneath isnt it?
Cant you rape one of them for a wheel?
I was in a serious pile up in an Escort "ahem" and only one cars air bag went off out of 7! even more disturbing was that one car was a top spec Ncap Renault at the time and the drivers seat ripped from the floor it was only the air bag and the windscreen which stopped him being ejected, this accident seriously slowed me down.....
The main reason i got a MK3 was because the two accidents i had in MK2s left the cars really badly buckled and twisted at a low speeds and the MK3 has had some thought put into it design.
It is probably good to have airbags and the like but avoiding the accident is even better so ABS, good tyres/brakes and not being a numpty is better by far.
The worst bit of a serious smash is the slow mo as you watch your bonnet crumple and get closer......
