Hey guys, im new to the site as ive just bought my very first GTI, its a J plate 91 MK2 16V in Oak Green and is the car ive wanted for over 10 years! Im so in love with her already and ive only had her since Sunday evening and already done 300 miles!
Thing is im new to it all and as ive bought one at the moderate to low pricing bracket it does need some work doing so thought i would seek the help of you guys.
First thing i would like to get sorted is the clucth, its done 172000 miles and its slipping quite annoyingly from time to time when trying to get the power down. Ive had quotes in the region of £220-£350 for a clutch replacment from local garages with the clutch kits coming from German and Swedish, was wondering if this is really the way i should go and what you thought on the quotes!
Secondly i would love to get the BBS alloys refurbished but have no idea where to look and what sort of price range i would be looking at paying, they arnt in terrible condition but there is some slight surface rusting coming through and they are beginning to look a little 'rusty orangey' in certain places.
The rest of the car seems pretty good so far and its only really cosmetic items i would like to work on like a new rear parecel shelf as i would like to try and keep it original as best as i can, (previous owner added some 6*9s to the shelf) I will probably try and attend some VW meets to pick up such items from trade stalls in the near future. Also the instrument panel doesnt light up, any ideas? could it be a mojor problem or is it more than likley just the bulbs?
Anyway guys any help for a noob would be highly appriciated.

Clutch is about £60 in parts and would take a good few hours to do yourself. You'd need to remove the driveshafts from the differential, support the weight of the engine, unbolt the mounts off the gearbox, disconnect the gear linkage, unbolt the gearbox from the block, withdraw the box and then fit clutch.
The amount of time it will take will be dependant on the condition of the driveshaft diff bolts and how strong you are (mentally and physically).
Refurbing your wheels, you can either DIY or pay for it. Expect to pay around £25+ per wheel for a refurb. If you DIY, you need a big tub of nitromoors, to strip the paint off the face and a lot of patience. I think I'd rather pick up some extra shifts at work and pay someone else for their time! Some wheel refurb companies are poop though - so make you check out their work first, and don't just go with the cheapest, or you'll be repeating the procedure in 12 months time.
Dash illumination could be a few things, its driven off a variable resistor in the headlight switch - these contacts could become a little corroded and explain why you have nothing. You can bridge the pins to double check that its not just the bulbs.

Thanks for the heads up Ben, like you i would rather pay for the work to be done myself, i have no way of being able to do the clutch myself although im no novice under the bonnet i have none of the equip needed. As for the wheels £25 seems pretty reasonable and i will have to do some searching for refurb companies unless there are users who could recommend some decent companies for me that they have used themselves. Will have to get behind the clocks tonight and have a look at the state of affairs, thanks again for the reply.

Sorry mate, im just outside Northampton in Daventry.

With the clutch, it's worth checking the clutch cable first - my old 8v used to slip and a new cable at about 14£ fixed it no problem. My dash lights also don't work - do the lights for the heater panel come on at all? if it's just the clocks, it could be bulbs that have gone (see search function for how to replace) - if all the lights are off, it's probably the aforementioned headlight switch with the dimmer switch part not working properly... Also check the earth cable that grounds on the rocker cover of the engine (the earth wire bolts to the corner facing the bulkhead - cleaning the contacts up with some sand paper sometimes sorts it out...

Thanks for all the replies and help guys. Skiing, it is all the lights on the dash, think i will get it out and have a look behind the headlight switch as mentioned. Thanks again.
Thought i would post a quick pic of my lady.

Is there a fuse for dash illumination?

Is there a fuse for dash illumination?
LMFAO, i never even thought of that. I will have a look.

Hmm nice car ... much like mine lol  welcome to the site and to the wonderful world of Mk2`s, trust me you will end up loving that car and it will put a smile on your face every time you drive it :nerd:
As far as dash illumnation is concerned I would do as someone previously mentioned and check the slider above the headlight switch and make sure the lighting is actually turned `up` first otherwise you might just be in the unfortunate position that all 3 bulbs are out (your LCD MFA at the bottom in the middle should light up green too) Thankfully its not a massive job to change all these bulbs and only the MFA one is a beast to get too though it can all be done without having to take the clocks out
-
Welcome to the gang. I got my clutch changed by my pet grease monkey as it was January, Baltic and I'm lazy in general.
Cost me 120.00 with me supplying clutch, plus that included getting the idle set and vacum hoses replaced.
Nice car, 5dr version of mine

daventry, might see you about.
I'm between there and rugby

GSF Luk clutch has not got rave reviews from my basic research..
Was pointed towards a sachs one: http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=728 (http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=728)

Thanks ever so much for all your replies and welcomes to the site guys.
edpryce, what you driving? i will keep an eye out.
Thanks to Goops for the recommendation on the clutch from Sachs and for the refurb link, im just waiting for my quote now.
MK2George, ive looked at the slider (as with the fuses and they are fine) and it all seems to be ok, my MFA lights up fine and the dimmer switch actually dims the LCD MFA. The fog light and heated screen bulbs are working but they are really reaaly dim, so much so you can hardly see them when lit up even in pitch black surroundings, but the dimmer does have an effect and when on low it basically turns them off!. The clocks and the heater controls are the ones that i have no light from at all so im hoping to find its just the bulbs.

Already makes me smile so much when i get in it. Problem is i dont have anywhere near enough money to do the things i want to do to her right now and being as impatient as me its down right frustrating. The list is growing evertime i come onto the forum and read others posts and see their examples of MK2s, the other thing is being a novice with owning and working on GTIs is im not sure what the best things are to do and in what order they should be done in. Guess im just going to have to cut down on beer and save save save.

Yeah man, I know what you mean. I'd recommend the basic panel filter (green cotton or K&N), Exhaust, I like my magnex system, but it comes down to personal taste and budget. Another mod I'd recommend would be some grooved/drilled discs matched pads. 5.0 brake fluid and braided hoses are worth while additions. Then lower it approx 40mm/ front upper/lower strut brace and some decent tyres on and enjoy you're handiwork, that is..... until you get the urge for more power....

As much as we all love the athetics on our cars and want them to look exactly as we want them Id recommend getting all the mechanical (if any) work done first. This is the hardest and normally most expensive stuff to do and once thats out of the way you can concentrate on getting it looking exactly as you want. Ive just changed the gearbox oil, release bearing and all of the shift rods on my motor and now thats done I wont need to go back to anything regarding the gearbox till its clutch time (eventually) I tend to section various parts of the car off to get done so I can tick the box and move on to the next bit! Nice thing about the Mk2 is that its a big meccano set and theres really nothing that you cant diagnose and get fixed either by yourself or relatively cheaply!
All the best with it

Dunno, I disagree with the above ... I'd rather make sure the body was sound and not all rotten before wasting any money on running gear.
Only real way to check all the bodywork is sound is to strip it back a la respray.

Id take the bodywork as a given as you wouldnt bother buying it in the first place if it was rotten no?? And I cant imagine needing to strip it all back to get a gist of what condition it is - a bit extreme methinks
OR
Are you saying the first thing you would do when you get your newly purchased Mk2 home is strip all the paint off and get it resprayed?

When i bought the car it came with a full ST/ST Scorpion exhaust with a DTM back box (Would like to replace to original shape), the Tyres are Pirelli P6000 all round and have plenty of tread, the pads front and back have been changed within the last 2 months so may wait till they need doing again before i upgrade those along with the discs. Ive now had a quote from a friend at a garage who said he will fit the clutch for £100 for me if i supply the kit so thats being done wednesday, Stereo is coming today and will be looking to replace the speakers from originals to better ones next week but neet to figure out sizes so i can retain the original look behind the grills in place. Will be servicing it next week myself so will look into a panel filter like one named above, new oil filter, plugs (Is there any plugs out there that would be better than other?) and oil. Also would like to upgrade the bulbs in the front lights as they are pretty yellow'ish at the moment, especially the fogs.
Have slight blistering and bubbling rust around the 3rd unused front windscreen wiper grommit so will need to get in there dig it out and repair it, also a reasonable dent behind the drivers side wheel that needs to be pulled out, filled then taken to the spray shop. Other than that it really is in good nick.

It looks nice you must be proud , the wheels dont look to bad , a lot of the staining could be removed with alloy wheel cleaner, patience and a toothbrush ... follow the instructions though they can be very caustic and do damage. If they are cleaner you can live with them and spend on the esentials until funds permitting you refurb.....Mark H

Sounds like you're headin in the right direction. NGK plugs are not bad in my experience. Bout 10.00 for 4, tops. 100.00 sounds ok for fitting a clutch Sachs are tried and tested.
As to bulbs I'd recommend a HID conversion as you're about 20.00 for decent bulbs and HID conversions are about 60.00 and last about a million times longer plus they're muuuch brighter, worthwhile if you're keeping the car.
as for binning 3rd wiper I found a decent sized steel washer welded in then filled over. Lasted 8yrs on my old 8v.

Lol - decent bulbs aren't £20 - you just have to know where to look *cough* *cough* *wholesalers*
On eBay, you can pickup HID kits for about £15 on auction nowadays

Wholesalers, indeed, but from Halfrauds you are looking @ 15.00/£20.00
£15!? for HIDs? Will they not burn your car to the ground?

There's a good chance, but at least the rozzers won't be able to book you for having them illegally.
They're the same sets that sell more expensive, its just that a lot of sellers auction them and because there's so many, they sell cheap.

edpryce, what you driving? i will keep an eye out.
3dr black gti 8v on p slots. got a bbs kit on it which might make it more memorable but i spend a lot of my time in sheffield.

Welcome first and foremost.. & a very nice straight looking car congratulations on your purchase..
Some of the basics many have covered already, so I will try and baseline some of the other item, while having the clutch done, I'd recommend changing the diff/gearbox oil, get the break hoses visually inspected especially the ones at the back, suspension wise there is a lot out on the market to suit all budgets, I've tried a few and settled for the Weitec GT Kit (Good value for money), uprate the top front mounts at the same, exhaust again tried many and a genuine standard item seems to be just as good as any in terms of flow, the remainder is down to the look/noise you require which will lead you to after market brands, brakes if/when they need doing then pagid fast road pads with either brembo/zimmerman rotors all work well together.
If your brake lines ever do need replacing then like already mentioned on the thread go for a set of goodridge stainless lines, it will improve the pedal feel no end, also some decent brakefluid to suit. Beyond that a good service Bosch WX78 plugs work well, if/when replacing any belts then either Bosch or VAG, if the cambelt needs doing then VAG do a kit, I have that part number if you ever require it, when doing the cambelt it's always worth doing the camshaft/auxilary shaft seals too, next will be all of the suspension bushes in time, if sticking to OEM then for the front wishbones I usually just get OEM items with the bushes already pressed in saves time, drop link bushes are usually the next suspect, followed by lower ball joints at which point alignment work a must after installation, MK2's have a little bit adjustment on the front for camber, thereafter the next item on the list could be your gear linkage, maybe a little play, sloppy or difficult to engage some gears, get a refurb kit and replace the lot including the rod linkage in the bay leading upto the gear box itself, we replaced mine with some metal ball joint item when we first acquired the car back in late 04 and still going strong today.
Tyres P6000's won't really go much wrong there, many use Toyo T1R's, I prefer Perreli P7's nice progressive grip and not a bad looking groove either, from here on in you then have a solid base that your comfortable with to then progress further should you wish to from a power prospective.
Anyway a little insight there to my journey to date, happy motoring you won't regret your purchase, there is something about a MK2 that will always put a smile on your face.
PS. Speaker F = 5 1/4 & R = 6x4's in standard OEM locations.

Thanks for the post G-star.
Ive now had the clutch fitted to my 16V and what a difference! i went for the Sachs as suggest earlier and its great.
Do need to get a few things sorted now for the next MOT although i have some time to do so i want to get it all done asap, need to replace my front brake pipes so was wondering if anyway knows what i should be going for! is Stainless a good option or is there no real pointand if so is there much of an improvment?
Sorted out my dash illumination problem too, just replaced all the bulbs and away i went! i can now see how quick im travelling at night lol. I couldnt replace the bulbs in the heater control panel though as it looks to be a sealed unit, where would be the best place to pick up things like that? Also need a rear parcel shelf and Front Fox light glass covers but most places ive tried have not got any. If anyone knows of somewhere i can get these parts could you please let me know. Thanks.
-
Good stuff, heater control unit is a sealed unit, there is a link to tell you how to seperate it.
I had it sent to me by rubjonny, it's in german but the pictures are excellent. I'll see if I can dig it out for you.
Glass for fog lamps? I dunno GSF? Ebay? Classifieds on here? Volksmine?
i think you'll be struggling to find an unmolested rear shelf these days as most cars have had speaker holes cut into them.
However a foray into the scrappie may turn up gold as they want the earth for them on ebay etc.
-
If you cant find a decent mk2 parcel shelf for a reasonable price then a mk3 golf one will fit

reeeeally?, Interesting I had my mk2 and mk3 side by side yesterday transfering crap from one boot to the other and thought they looked like they would fit but didn't have time to double check. Fortunately though i have a mint mk2 one from my old 8v that i had squirrled away.

Thanks for having a look for me. GSF unfortunatly dont do Fog lights for the MK2 anymore but may have sourced from Volksmine.
Just out of curiosity what should the 16V idle at? mines sitting at around 1500 when cold dropping to around 1250 then when nice and warm around 1000. Thanks

Revs sound about right. Think you will be lucky sourcing foglight glass as they normally come as a complete unit. Ebay do some decent ones though stay away from the cheap £25 set as they melt when they get hot and are a complete waste of time
