Really what to fit an ipod adaptor to my VW MFD2 DVD SAT NAV unit. Because I don't have an arm rest at the moment  I will have to opt for the adaptor that fits with in the glove box. Was going to buy a b rand new original one off ebay today. Does any one know how difficult it would be to fit one of these? Many Thanks Brett

Hello!
My best mate (who's a BMW technician) struggled with my dash for a good half hour getting the dash apart, but once its apart it goes together quite easily. It took him a while as I was in the car at the time, he didn't want to damage it!
You need a trim removal set, lots of masking tape, a torx set (with a stubby handle or ratchet for one bolt by the screen) and you're away.

You do know that you don't get full IPOD control or know what the tracks are with the IPOD kit don't you?
You end up guessing the tracks and you can only have 5 playlists, which have no displayed titles.

Really, no I did not know that! What options are there so the ipod will play on screen with the tracks showing?

The only option you have to get the IPOD track titles, playlist titles and all playlists listed is to go for the RNS510 or an aftermarket set-up.
I had the IPOD link in the centre console and it fails on the following counts
1. It can only play 5 playlists from the IPOD and you don't get title of the playlists on the head unit...just numbers.
2. Once you are playing a playlist it will only number the tracks 1 to 99 with no titles for the tracks and when you go past track 99 it shows track 01 again, which is actually track 101,201,301 etc
3.Using the head unit you only have control over the two functions above, you cannot select favourites etc.
VW has addressed this with the RNS510, but for the rest of you who have anything else less than this or an aftermarket head-unit, you will be disappointed!

I had this problem with my Honda and I drives me mad, I am going to look into buying RNS510 unit!! Any ideas where to get them from with out paying silly main dealer prices?
-
ebay for RNS 510, or vwnavi.com
-
How secure are these units? Just thinking if I fit an rns 510 will it not be easy to steal and re-use?
-
Hurdy - did your head unit fit in nicely by default - I mean did you have to put any extra trim around it to get it to fit into the slot in the car flush?
-
I have an ipod adapter and an RNS510, and I do not get the track names either. Just appears as though it was a six disc CD changer tracks 1-99, as before. I looked at this on VWnavi before and the only way to get the track listings is to get the MDI interface such as the Kufatec one at the link below

picked up my car on saturday and VW are doing the mdi interface for the rns 510 for 199 including fitting and vat.
job done

Yes, it needed a fascia adapter.

Is the fascia adapter difficult to fit? what needs to be done. Thanks

The fascia adapter takes roughly one minute to fit around the head unit (once you get one you'll see instantly how easy it is). Getting it back out again once in place takes a little more patience
