..would you expect your crankshaft angle sensor/engine speed sensor to fail?

Mine seems to be showing up as a fault (which would explain the non start and cutting out), but i had only had one put in June 08  :huh:

hard to say and i would expect them to last years but check the wiring too as this will show as a fault with the sensor!! (and seems a common issue!)

Would having a damaged wire to it cause the same cutting out issues as a faulty sensor?

yes and it would give the same fault code too!
