Ive seen a Mk5 Grey ED30 at a dealership - well not seen it, but seen it on the net!
From what I can see, if has the following options.....
Xenons,
MFSW
Highline
Centre Arm Rest
Tinted Glass
Cruise Control
Rain Sensor (Is this part of winter pack??)
The car was registered in June 2008 - so has a lot of its warranty left.
It is advertised at 4503 miles. Listed at £18,995
I rang the dealership today, and found out that the car has now done 10,000 miles. I asked why, and was told it was a demo car. Only the salesman had driven it - no customers etc. though.
I asked if this increase in milleage affected the price, and he asked his manager and came back saying they couldnt lower the price any further. he said they are selling Golf's and not re-filling spaces, as they are hard to come by now.
He offerred me £1750 in part-ex for my current 2000 (X reg) Fiesta Zetec S - which was quite good - probably what I would get if I sold private.
He also offered me a 'chip' to 300hp for an extra £500 - which I probably wouldnt do just yet anyways (I didnt think dealers did this?)
So I could get it for just above £17k I guess.
What do you think?
Are Demo cars thrashed about?? Are they just used to take potential customers for a drive etc??
I was considering offering him £16,500, and my car, in exchange for the ED30, and a full first service - do you think this is a good deal or not?
Thanks in advance.

my mate works at a dealership, he brings similar cars home till they sell just like you mention, he dont thrash it, he just uses it everyday, he dont really care about it though and also smokes in them etc, when i questioned this, he just said he didnt care as it wasnt his car.
-
I've noticed it is a VAT qualifying vehicle. Surely that means it isn't an official UK model and is a personal import?
It would also mean a 2yr warranty instead of a 3 yr on wouldn't it?
-

This is exactly what Im concerned about, but then again, when purchasing a used vehicle, an you ever really be sure of how its been treated?!

Hmmm, good point. I'll question him on that tomorrow and see what he says..... ;)
Does that also mean you have to tell your insurance company its an import etc??
How else does an import differ from a UK spec??
If it does turn out to be a full UK spec etc, what do you think of the price etc?
-
So, hang on....
The dealership has doubled the mileage on it and won't budge on price......
The phrase "Foxtrot Oscar" springs to mind.
They're having a laugh if they think that by putting mileage on it, it won't affect the price.....
All IMHO ;)
Dan
-
when i looked at buying the 1.4 twin charged golf he told me we would be doing them a favour as they get a new demo once they had sold the 1.4 demo
yes they need to drop the price or throw in the chip for free
employees drive the car and potential customers like you already said
-
Been to my local dealership a number of times for test drives and have always driven the car myself (hard) when on a test drive. but also noticed that any of the demo's I have been in are used by sales staff on a daily basis.
You would think that they were asked to keep them tidy and clean but more often that not they are usally very poorly maintained and quite scruffy from my experience.
-
I had a demo car. It was in perfect condition until after I bought it
But it had less than 3000 miles on the clock. Haven't had any problems with it since and I'm now on 10k.
But the change in mileage is significant enough to change the price, so the fact that they won't budge should tell you what they think of you. Walk away.
Rain sensors are standard, so don't be fooled. Armrest I think is standard on ED30. The other things - highline, mfsw, xenons, cruise control and tinted rear windows are all optional extras.
There's no harm in going to have a look at the car. There's a list of things to look for in maintenance section so check them out. £500 isn't enough for the difference if you accept the chip. I'd want a decrease in price + the 10k service (just an oil change I think). They might not be able to come down in price but you should be able to get them to throw in extra things.
If they don't, walk away. You won't have lost anything.
-
Thanks a lot guys, much appreciated.
I did say to him on the phone that the only thing putting me off was the fact that the milleage had more then doubled, but wasnt reflected in price. I would deffo expect a reduction in price because of it.
I'll take your advice though. Im in no rush to buy, so if they dont lower the price and service it for free, I'll leave it!
If he does agree to lower the price, how much should I accept? £500-600? Considering its more then doubled its milleage, I would expect at least that I reckon.....
Oh and if its an import, and he didnt bother to mention it to me, then I'll also walk!
-
I'm toying with selling my ED30 its a '57 full UK spec import (Germany). 5 door, Silver, 10k and i'm the 1st owner from new (FVWSH).
I have Bluefin but mapped back to standard as the car drives better without it (in my opinion) so will throw that in.
Immaculate throughout.
Open to offers....
Let me know.
-
waddler - so you've removed the Blufin?? I want a standard car for now (blank canvas and all ;) ), if so then PM me - Im interested ;)
-
Is the warranty the only main drawback of an imported car - thefact that it only has 2 years rather then 3?
-
Rain Sensor (Is this part of winter pack??)
These are standard fit on all GTIs/Ed30s/R32s - so why the fcuk do stealers have to list 'standard' equipment!
The car was registered in June 2008 - so has a lot of its warranty left.
But when was it built? And just how long does the warranty run till?
It is advertised at 4503 miles. Listed at £18,995
I rang the dealership today, and found out that the car has now done 10,000 miles.
The report the cnuts to their local Trading Standards - because this is a clear and absolute breach of advertising regulations. Typical of Mann Egerton!
I asked why, and was told it was a demo car. Only the salesman had driven it - no customers etc. though.
Reallly . . . . if no customers havn't driven it, then it aint a demonstrator. :smug:
I asked if this increase in milleage affected the price, and he asked his manager and came back saying they couldnt lower the price any further. he said they are selling Golf's and not re-filling spaces, as they are hard to come by now.
A doubling of the stated mileage is CLEAR grounds for reducing price - period. Just ask them to produce Glasses prices for both sets of mileage! :smug:
He also offered me a 'chip' to 300hp for an extra £500 - which I probably wouldnt do just yet anyways (I didnt think dealers did this?)
What type of chip? Because not all chips deliver what is advertised for the Ed30. And if it begins with either 'S' or 'B', then £500 is a rip-off.
Are Demo cars thrashed about?? Are they just used to take potential customers for a drive etc??
That is the $64,000 question? Most demo cars are thrashed, but some may not be - but how would you honestly know? I once bought a demo car, and subsequently found that it had been quite severly thrashed. Furthermore, don't forget that car salesmen usually have fcuk all 'mechanical sympathy', and probably wouldn't have the foggiest idea how to correctly care for a car, and particularly one with a turbo.
I was considering offering him £16,500, and my car, in exchange for the ED30, and a full first service - do you think this is a good deal or not?
I don't comment on prices per-se, but but a good bargaining point would be a proper service included in the deal. But you MUST make sure that you specify a full, proper service, as per the official service schedule - because many, MANY stealers pull a fast one - and will generally just do a 'used car inspection', but then stamp the service book to appear as a pukka service.
As always, 'caveat emptor'.
-
I've noticed it is a VAT qualifying vehicle. Surely that means it isn't an official UK model and is a personal import?
It would also mean a 2yr warranty instead of a 3 yr on wouldn't it?
Is that correct? Never come across that before - but then I know sod all about VAT anyway! :embarassed:
But if the OP wants to PM me the full VIN - then I can do an on-line look up to check the official status, along with any other non-genuine options which may be dealer fitted.
I wonder if it has the 2zone climate?
-

This is exactly what Im concerned about, but then again, when purchasing a used vehicle, an you ever really be sure of how its been treated?!
But with a privately owned car, you can generally get a good indication of how the previous owner treated it. When you go to view a private sale car - if they offer you first dibs on the test drive, just say 'no thanks, I'd rather you drove it first, then I'll take over the driving later' - that way, you get a good idea of how they treat it from cold.
But with a demo car, they arn't actually owned by ANYONE who drives them, and I would reckon that about 90% of demo cars never get treated properly. That could mean driving hard from cold, not allowing the turbo to heat up or cool down correctly - as well as out and out thrashing (which they do get).
IMHO, demo cars are a much worse bet than a privately owned car. And the only car worse than a demo, is an ex-rental car - 'cause we all know that Avis or Hertz rental cars are the fastest! :lipsrsealed:

Yes, insurance companies will all want to know if it isnt a proper UK car, supplied from new through a UK franchised dealer.
If/when you view it, first, look at the service book, and make a note of who did the PDI. Second, make a note of the full VIN, and PM it to me, and I will check the exact status of the car.
How else does an import differ from a UK spec??
Quite a few.
-
Thanks T_T - would the dealer give me the VIN number over the phone though??
I am swaying away from it a little after the stories Im hearing of Demo cars! If it was still around 4k miles, as advertised, it wouldnt bother me as much - but the car probably hasnt been 'run-in' or cared for very much if its a demo at 10k miles......shame, as it has everthing Im after TBH....
Nevertheless, as I said, if they wont budge on price and throw in a full service, I'll walk. I have plenty of time on my side at the mo. Then again, the dealer said he would be ringing me back this morning, but he hasnt so far.....Im not gona chase after him when it should be the other way round! ;)
-

I dunno. Some might, some might refuse - on the grounds of potentially cloning the car. But you could give them some BS about trying to get an insurance quote, but feed them some speil about the insurance company not recognising the reg number (because they think it is an import), and they can only quote with a full VIN.

Yup, there are pleanty of other good cars out there. You may have to wait a little longer, but it will be worth it in the long run.
-
Thats just it T_T - the fact that its a demo car probably means its been thrashed about and not cared for. I mean seriously, if someone gave you a car to 'look after', would you really drive it as though its one of your own?!
Feeling a bit gutted. Saw the ad - thought they would come down to around £18k at least, at at 4k miles I would have gone for it. Didnt know it was a demo car at 10k now!!
-
Ifti... I wouldn't touch a demo car - no way. I'm not saying that they are all bad but 95% of them most probably are. Would you buy an ex-rental car... ? I reckon they are treated in the same way. Buy private or a previously privately-owned car from a dealer.
-
Thanks illyun, and everyone else.
Ive decided not to go for it.
I'll keep casually looking until the right spec comes along!
Much appreciated guys. ;)
-
Im gonna leave it a few weeks to see if anything else comes up - getting frustrated here!
Saw another Grey ED30 DSG, 14k miles, 07 plate, some extras like MFSW, Highline, Sat Nav, Ipod Prep, Rear Parking sensors, etc - was up for £16,500.
Was gonna go see it, but just phoned em and it has been sold :(
If anyone comes across a Grey or Silver ED30 DSG, please gimme a shout!!
Must have MFSW, Highline, Centre Arm Rest - and preferably Xenons!
-

Ive emailed the guy with an offer of £18k!
Nevertheless, he's dropped to £19k so far - that was a couple of weeks back though. Looks like he still hasnt sold it.
Worth another shot?
Oh and I did confirm with him that it also has Highline.
-
^^^^
Im going to see this one on the weekend, so any opinions welcome! ;)
Spoke to the guy who says its his sons car, and has hardly been used, hence the reason for sale. Just under 4k miles, with a few options etc on it. Full UK spec, so its under VW warrenty for another 2 years at least....
Is 19k a decent price for it??
Gotta ask him if he does finance as well (he has a car dealership as well)!
-
nice car and spec mate!
matsu
-
I'd still be looking to pull a little extra out of the price.
Another member on here managed to get a 5dr ED30 with DSG highline and Sat nav for under £19k
-
The VAT qualifying bit is if the car, may be an ex demo car, or it may be an ex PCP/contract hire.
If you are VAT reg. motor trader you can reclaim the VAT on the whole cost of the car.

Which would everyone say are the most popular formats?
For example I reckon most dsg's tend to be 5-doors? And the 3-doors tend to be manuals?
Or would someone beg to differ?
-
Yup, Im going to try to get it down as much as I can!!
I may start by offerring 18k?
-

I think most ED30's tend to be manuals, whether 3 or 5 door TBH. Thats certainly what Ive found from looking around.
-
And silver tends to be the least specced colour.
Which means a 5dr silver DSG is quite rare for an ED30
-
True - very rare. Found a few 3 door silver DSG, but not 5.
Found LOADS of 3 door silver manuals though!!
A very rare car you have there Hurdy, you lucky git!!
Thats why Ive gone to the next best - grey ;)
-
I have never been a massive fan of 5-door hatchbacks - I have an A4 Avant 3.0TDI V6 for that job.
When i was looking for my ED30 I limited myself to 3-doors, xennon's, cruise, MFSW + highline.
Turns out all I could find at the time was one that had DSG. But to say I picked it up for the same price as several manuals that were floating around was I suppose the main factor in why I went for it.
I'm just trying to guage how sort-after 3-door DSG ED30's are? As it seems every 3-door I come across is manual.
-
interesting read
did the original VW dealer not ring you back then
also what's:
MFSW, Highline

Yup, most 3 door models Ive seen are also manual. The dealer that I originally spoke to said the DSG in ED30's are quite rare. Not sure why that is, but there do seem to be a lot of 3 door ED30's with manual transmission floating around.
I wouldnt mind a 3 door, but want to go for a 5 door since it will also be used as a family car with my 2 children. As they grow older a 5 door will be much better, since I dont change cars very often, so am looking to keep the GTI for a long while if poss!

The original dealer did ring me back late in the afternoon - not in the morning as promised.
I was pretty busy at work, so couldnt answer straight away. I did mean to ring him back but just never got round to it. He didnt bother ringing me again either after that.
Ive lost interest since hearing its a demo car though, so Im not too bothered ;)
MFSW = Multifunctional Steering Wheel - the steering wheel with buttons for volume, phone (if you have a compatible Bluetooth Kit installed) etc.
Highline = the computer in between the dials. On many GTI's you get a midline, where the top half of the computer display has a blanking plate over it. The Highline is where the entire display is viewable, and I believe you are also able to change more options etc then you can with a midline.
Having both the above also means you can change many of the options via the steering wheel buttons I believe.

Eeek. You really shouldn't offer any price in advance of viewing. That just makes you look a little too keen - and they may be less inclined to bargain later.
And don't forget, if you want me to check out the full spec, then PM me the VIN.
-
And silver tends to be the least specced colour.
Not mine! It had virtually every option ticked! :embarassed:
-
How much do you think I should offer if I go see it?
-
How much do you think I should offer if I go see it?
I personally don't know. Used car prices really arn't my strong point. But as a rule of thumb, if he advertises it at £19k, and you genuinely would be happy paying £18k - then try opening negociations at £17k - and take it from there. You may get a few raised eyebrows, and the obligatory 'sharp intake of breath through clenched teeth'! But keep going.
But you obviously need to show to the seller that you are genuinely interested in actually purchasing the car. If the seller happens to think that you are not serious at wanting to purchase, they might not be prepared to spend an hour or so haggling. Find out how long hes had the car, lay it on thick about the recession and cars not selling, and remind him you will be doing HIM a big favour to his cashflow account.
Just think of it like a game of Poker - keep all your cards close to your chest - but put a realistic opening offer on the table, and both work from there, and keep it friendly. Unfortunately, with a non genuine dealer, you can't add 'sweetners' into the deal quite as easily. But you can still ask for 12 months road tax, a full tank of fuel, and maybe a set of floor mats (if it already has the carpet ones, say you live down a muddy road, and would also want the rubber mats thrown in too). But don't bother with anything like AutoGlym Lifeshine - 'cause that is pants.
-
Well its listed at 20k at the moment, which I do think is overpriced.
I offered him 18k via email, since I didnt want to waste time viewing the car if he wasnt gonna budge. He said he couldnt do that low, but would drop to £19k - a clear grand already!
However, he doesnt know it was me emailing. When I rang I didnt mention the fact that I had already been in touch with him! lol
Hence Im really going as a 'new' customer.
If all is well I may offer him £17.5k, and try to get him to come down further. If he drops even more, nearer to £18 or £18.5, I'll strongly consider it ;)
It was registered in August 08, and he says it cost him just over £25k when new, because of the options it also has on it, such as the Bluetooth, MFSW, etc. So its literally 8 months or so old, with just under 4000 miles on it. Although he has a dealership with the more higher priced cars, like Astons etc, he bought this privately for his son, who hardly uses it, hence the reason for sale....
-
Start low and haggle hard it is a buyers market at the moment.
-
I hear its a buyers market for new cars though, and that the market for used cars was pretty strong, since everyone is buying used at the mo??.....
