Title: MFA, is this right?
Post by: dan_apps on 09 March 2009, 11:38
just noticed MFA seems to be working fine apart from the mpg reading, average about 30mpg on motorways etc usually but since i changed the clutch cable whatever im doing i.e. pootling in traffic or flat out down the M4 it says im not doing more than 14mpg?!? am i just expecting too much from 18 yr old technology or have i broken something?  :embarassed:

cheers Dan

i also have this issue, was working fine (well i was excepting the read out at around 28 mpg on average) but has since stopped working for no reason it seems and now reads about 12mpg at an absolute best!!!  i believe it works using a vacuum tube to the back of the clocks? could this be a perished pipe/leaking?

any help would also be appreciated!

Mines the same, its off by a factor of 3 - only ever shows 13mpg. My pipes alright - I would have thought if it were leaking the sensor would show less vacuum > more miles, which should be higher mpg.

I've been lead to think its just the sensor on the back of the clocks itself.

Mine used to read about 9-12, got the vacuum pipe fixed and its now reads 35ish

ok so looks like ive fooked it then, i belive there is a clear pipe that runs throught the hole from the engine bay to the cabin, must have been where i rammed the new clutch cable through! ah well

thanks guys :afro:

check for a clear vacuum tube near the ignition coil on the bulkhead, it slips inside a braided hose. mine came out of the braided hose and was reading 12mpg  :undecided:

i stuck it back in and straight back up to 35/40 mpg

in the scuttle tray, look where the clutch cable goes through into the cabin and it should be there, it is on mine anyway

Hi
can be difficult to identify the pipe in engine bay - one way is to look up behind dash (remove drivers side under dash shelf) and find fine transparent pipe (goes to centre of clocks sort of behind oil/water/main beam warning lamps)  reach  up behind the dash and wiggle pipe gently back and forward - get someone to watch in engine bay for movement. Dont pull it out from back of clocks - fiddly to get back on (unless you have very long skinny fingers with thick scratch proof skin).

well mine was making a funny whistling noise when this happened as the disconnected pipes were sucking air in... so following my ears led me to the culprit.

to find your ignition coil, follow the spark plug leads to the distributor, then follow the middle distributor lead up to the coil (mounted on the bulkhead, next to the expansion tank).

the little clear tube should disappear inside a black braided pipe close the the coil - it might have come free resulting in crappy MPG readings

could that vacuum hose that runs the mfa cause an air leak which would make the whistle? because i do actualy hav an air leak just dont know where it is or whats disconnected!!!

When I first bought my Mk2, my MPG was out, but after pulling the dash fuse for a while to fix something else, it seemed to properly reset the MFA and it worked after that.

As said though, its probably your vac pipe.
