Title: Mk 5 GTI Cup Track Car
Post by: dubaiphil on 09 March 2009, 11:26
Ok, I have managed to find an unused Mk5 GTI Cup car for sale in Dubai for 48,000 Dirhams (9,200 Pounds).  It would be used for trackdays, our local amateur touring car championship, and potentially the occasional 24 hour endurance race.  Below is the spec:

Standard 2007 model Golf GTi + conversion including

Multipoint bolt-in roll cage
Bonnet / boot pin kit
Hand held fire extinguisher kit
Sparco seats
Sparco steering wheel, 360mm
Sparco steering boss & steering hub
Aluminium floor plate left and right
Open Exhaust system after the standard catalyst without mufflers
Full race suspension from AST Holland
Auxiliary wiring loom
Competition brake pads from EPS PAGID Holland in the front only
Armoured brake hoses front and rear
18” Rimstock Team Dynamics aluminium racing wheels
TOYO R888 tyres
QUAIFE LSD
Superchips GOLF GTI race chip

As it's a standard GTI, and not an ED30, I think I'm right in saying that you can mod the engine by upgrading to a K4 Turbo.  Below are a list of mods that could up the performance a bit, but I'd be keen to hear what you all would suggest:

K4 Turbo
Upgraded Fuel Pump
Upgraded Intercooler
BBK - any suggestions on which kits to go for plus which pads (bearing in mind it gets warm out here!)
Anti Roll Bars
REVO chip
CAI

F*ck me that's a cheap toy.

I have no idea about the turbo, but enjoy!

Your first 3 things on your list are going to give you a noticeable power increase (after its been remapped to take into accounts the new bits) but will cost lots and lots :(

If you're gonna be racing, and are planning on changing the turbo/manifold anyway.. why not get a decent roller bearing turbo that will stand up to the heat.. rather than a weedy borg warner KKK?

Maybe drive it for a bit, learn the car and THEN make any changes?

Got pictures, please?

Here are some pictures - the paintwork will have to be changed!

I'm just starting haggling down to 40,000 AED now (7,700 Pounds)

A budget of 30,000 AED (5,700 Pounds) will get it up to a good spec for racing....

Awesome!

If you want to get into certain race series, it might be an idea to check the rules thoroughly to see what you can do to your car before you spend any money? :)

That's the good thing.  It's already fully specced for a now discontinued race series in Dubai, so is good to go.

The only problem is that the GTI is between groups in terms of performance in the local amateur Touring Car championship.  The turbo means you get hit with a 1.8 multiplier on the c.c. of the engine, so you're up against big engined race prepped cars.  It runs very well compared to the Clio Cup and 206 Cup cars, but as they're naturally aspirated they're in the class below.

Still, that's a good excuse to get around 400bhp out of it and have some fun....!

Wouldn't go for a CAI, wouldn't think you would gain much benefit as air temp might not be that different, espcially if it's a paper cone filter. Else if you use a SS cone, you'll more than probably have a problem will filtering out small particles.

Sounds like a great buy though!

I saw a few of these whilst I was out there the other week... we were setting up the Supercopa that TAM are running: http://www.revotechnik.com/community/events/revo_dubai.aspx

Problem you'll have is I assume you'd be up against the likes of the Supercopa running the same engine, but in a full race car. However it's all about having fun and at that price it'll be great. I imagine you're already in contact with Motaz and Mohammed from TAM, if not it's worth meeting up with them!
In regards the the filter, I'd look to get something from ITG with decent filtration for the conditions out there.
They are silly cheap for what you're getting... I know Tam had a couple in the shop whilst I was over, it'd be worth having a look as I'm sure there are a few of them out there up for grabs!

ATP 3071 kit????!!!!
